Veterinary representatives join activities at Kansas Science Festival

Zoetis research award goes to Dr. Dana Vanlandingham

Dr. Dana Vanlandingham, was chosen as this year's recipient of the Zoetis Animal Health Award for Research Excellence. Her research focuses on infectious diseases of animals, including zoonotic pathogens that infect a wide variety of animals — companion and livestock species — and humans.

"Summer is a time for all to enjoy, and by following these precautions, you and your pet will be able to enjoy it safely and to the fullest," said Susan Nelson, clinical professor at the Veterinary Health Center.

DMP team provides high-containment training to international scientists

Students in international high containment training program visit Flint Hills Discovery CenterDrs. Dana Vanlandingham and Natalia Costa Ball recently hosted 14 veterinary and laboratory professionals from 14 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Georgia, Guyana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Morocco, Mozambique, Paraguay, Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam) to learn how to safely conduct research in a high containment environment during the week-long program.

Frontier students conduct exercise on beachFifteen K-State students and faculty members crossed both academic and geographic frontiers on a journey through time when they embarked on the 39th Frontier Field Trip.

From March 23-26 students participated in “Archives and Anopheles: An historical journey into vector-borne disease in the American South,” in Charleston, South Carolina.

Aging Well: Big Island veterinarian Dr. Billy Bergin thanks his wife for keeping him healthy

Big Island veterinarian and historian Dr. Billy Bergin, DVM class of 1967, says he's "Aging Well" thanks to the love of his family. He is well-known in cowboy circles because he was the lead veterinarian for Parker Ranch for 25 years, but Dr, Bergin attributes his health and happiness to his 'ohana. The lifelong Hawaiian Island resident is well known as an animal doctor. He says he always loved the job, especially the ability to help in a crisis.

Kudos to alumnus Dr. Jessica Hodes, class of 2011 (holding the IV bag), as she and her veterinary nurse, Morgan Darter, (from Hodes Veterinary Health Center) were on the scene to help rescue a Clydesdale named Chrome that had been trapped in a muddy ravine for 5-6 hours. The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation announced that noted equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage, DVM class of 1975, will be presented with the Dinny Phipps Award. The award will be presented at a dinner hosted by the chairman of The Jockey Club, Stuart S. Janney III, in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Petznick named 2023 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award Winner

Dr. Tom Petznick, DVM class of 1995, a swine veterinarian based in Omaha, Nebraska, will receive the 2023 Science in Practice award at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference in September. For over 25 years,
Dr. Petznick has successfully met client needs through a balance of science-based and practical approaches to livestock health.

More activities and accomplishments in the College of Veterinary Medicine:

Drs. Katie Delph Miller and Chris Blevins hosted the Future Equine Vets spring meeting on Saturday, April 15. They had 22 students and 12 veterinarians (9 in person and 3 via Zoom) participate in the event. The purpose of the group is to provide mentorship to current veterinary students by pairing them with equine practitioners.

Dr. Thomas Schermerhorn was a member of the “Boehringer Ingelheim diabetes panel” on April 21.

Dr. Chieko Azuma was featured in the SPARC (Special Partners Advancing Research in Cancer) newsletter for the story, “Dr. Azuma’s radiation oncology helps both pets and ultimately humans” and for her partnership with Johnson Cancer Research Center.

Drs. Lauren Aldrich, David Upchurch and James Roush published, “Blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study of the efficacy of bupivacaine liposomal suspension using static bodyweight distribution and subjective pain scoring in dogs after tibial plateau leveling osteotomy surgery”, in the Wiley Clinical Research Journal.

Drs. Pearce Sloan, Brad White and Elizabeth Santschi published, “Racing performance of juvenile Thoroughbreds with femoropatellar osteochondrosis at auction: A retrospective case-control study,” in the May 16 edition of the Equine Vet Journal.

Drs. Kate KuKanich, Amy Burklund, Rob McGaughey, Nancy Muturi, Sasha Thomason, M.M. Chengappa, Ingrid Garrison, Bryna Stacey, Shuping Zhang, and Tamara Gull published, “One Health Approach for Reporting Veterinary Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales and Other Bacteria of Public Health Concern”, for the CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Online publication.

Dr. Elizabeth Davis provided an article, "Equine Herpesvirus in Horses: 2023" for the May edition of Trail Talk.

The U.S.-China Joint DVM Program held its annual homecoming event in May. Watch for a full report in the next issue of Lifelines.

Annual Staff Council Awards

An annual staff appreciation luncheon was hosted April 26 by the College of Veterinary Medicine Staff Council. This council represents all unclassified and university support staff in the college. One of the main priorities of the Staff Council is to acknowledge staff members for their contributions to the college’s mission.

The awards for 2023 are as follows:

High Five Award: Presented to an employee who has gone above and beyond in enhancing one or more components of the College of Veterinary Medicine's mission of exceptional teaching, impactful research, outstanding service, extraordinary graduates.

This year recipients are: Lisa Clauss, nursing supervisor; Sharon Greene, digital alumni biography project specialist; Joyce Neitfeld, program/project assistant in the dispensary; Jennifer Phinney, histology research assistant in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory; Susan Rose, clinical education technician; and Cody Steffey, radiologic technologist/radiology staff Supervisor.

Culture, Collegiality and Compassion Award: Presented to an employee who enhances a feeling of belonging for all of the College of Veterinary Medicine and creates a more inclusive environment while enhancing the College of Veterinary Medicine's mission of Exceptional Teaching, Impactful Research, Outstanding Service, Extraordinary Graduates.

This year’s recipients are: Cassidy Goering, veterinary nurse in the anesthesia section; and Wai Nin Tiffany Tsui, research assistant in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory.

Commitment to Excellence Award: Presented to six employees who have gone above and beyond in enhancing one or more components of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s mission of Exceptional Teaching, Impactful Research, Outstanding Service, Extraordinary Graduates.

The recipients are: Tiffany Copeland, veterinary nurse small animal surgery; Kodi Ginavan, radiologic technologist; Christine Hackworth, veterinary nurse in radiology; Vaughn Hamill, molecular research and development in the veterinary diagnostic laboratory; and Nick Hemphill, radiologic technologist/CT technologist.

Class of 2024 starts clinical rotations after White Coat ceremony

The 2023 banquet was held May 9 at the Manhattan Conference Center. A total of $240,000 in scholarships were presented to the senior students as listed on the 2023 scholarships page.
