Study confirms benefits from participation in veterinary-student research programs

A new collaborative article features several co-authors from the CVM, which has a long tradition of promoting student research programs.

"Veterinary students, and veterinarians in general, have a valuable skillset that makes them ideally suited to contribute to biomedical research and serve as important members of interdisciplinary research teams,” said Dr. Kate KuKanich, who serves as the current director of the Veterinary Research Scholars Program, or VRSP.

FFAR Research to Strengthen U.S. New World Screwworm Preparedness

As New World screwworm continues spreading, FFAR and several partners are investing $269,560 in a Rapid Outcomes from Agricultural Research (ROAR) grant to identify the livestock, wildlife and management practices most vulnerable to infestation. Led by the CVM's Dr. Natalia Cernicchiaro and Dr. Andrea Dixon, the researchers are conducting a meta-analysis of scientific literature, surveillance records and host distribution data to identify the animal species, production systems and husbandry practices most at risk.

U.S.-China Joint DVM Program hosts 12th annual homecoming event

The newest graduates in K-State's US-China Joint DVM Program were joined June 11 and 12 for a homecoming event by a large group of current veterinary students at the CVM. Together, they provided updates on their respective academic progress toward the completion of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, either at K-State or at one of three partnering veterinary colleges. This year the program celebrated its tenth graduating class and featured five graduates, 13 current DVM students and two preveterinary students who each gave a report.

The certificate honors fourth-year veterinary students who have distinguished themselves through outstanding didactic and clinical expertise and demonstrated a sincere interest in internal medicine. This year, more than 80 students from AVMA-affiliated veterinary schools around the world were selected to receive this recognition.

K-State brings together global experts to strengthen animal health preparedness

Scientist stand on stage to take questions from an audienceMore than 110 leaders from industry, government and academia gathered in Manhattan, June 8-10, for the Symposium on Biomanufacturing: Mitigating Transboundary Animal Disease Threats, hosted by the College of Veterinary Medicine in partnership with the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, or NBAF. The symposium was planned in partnership with Dr. Juergen Richt, university distinguished professor and Kansas Regents distinguished professor, director of CEEZAD and CEZID, housed in the CVM.

College of Veterinary Medicine hosts workshop to look at Strangles

Global equine-health experts recently gathered at K-State’s College of Veterinary Medicine in an effort to corral a highly prevalent disease called “strangles.” Dr. Laurie Beard, clinical professor of equine medicine and surgery at K-State, served as the local host of the workshop, which is entitled, “Getting to Grips with Strangles and other Streptococcal Diseases.” The workshop was organized under the leadership of Dr. Rob Keene, professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, in Duluth, Georgia.

Clinical Sciences thanks all the faculty who presented at the 88th Annual Conference for Veterinarians May 31-June 2, which includes: Drs. Matt Miesner, Brad White, David Upchurch, Brooke Davis, Kimberly Reeds, Chieko Azuma, Todd Gunderson and James Roush.

The KSU Shelter Medicine Team held its 1st Annual "Spayathon," with a total of 53 surgeries completed. Drs. Cody Dressler, Brooke Davis and Heather Moulding had a friendly competition to see who could perform a cat spay the fastest. Congratulations to Dr. Brooke Davis!

Dr. Pradeep Malreddy received an ICVA Certificate of Distinguished Volunteer Service in recognition of his contributions to the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and veterinary assessment.

Historic partnership advances with first exchange student

First Dublin extern completes Shelter Medicine rotation! The CVM recently welcomed Meagan Eickelbeck, a veterinary student from the University College Dublin, or UCD, and its School of Veterinary Medicine. She came to K-State for a two-week externship in the Community Outreach clinical rotation. Meagan is the first UCD student to participate in an externship at K-State since the collaborative agreement between Kansas State University, University College Dublin, and Iowa State University was established last August at the K-State and Iowa State football game held in Ireland.
