The theme of this issue is One Health Communication and Education . All of the articles below display exciting applications of the One Health concept. This issue of the One Health Newsletter was written by professionals, post doctoral associates, and graduate/veterinary students with the assistance of our faculty editorial board and guest contributors.

The theme for the Summer One Health Newsletter is One Health and Pandemics, and
for Fall is One Health Research. We are calling all One Health professional and student
advocates to submit article ideas to one of the editorial board members for either of
these editions. The expected distribution for the next newsletter will be in July 2020.

Student Editors

Valerie Jojola Mount A graduate student in the Master of Public Health program at Kansas State University. Her general focus is in infectious disease and zoonoses, with aspirations to further concentrate in epidemiology. She obtained a B.A. from the University of New Mexico in Biological Anthropology. Of particular interest for her is how the social determinants of health impact patterns of behavior like breastfeeding, particularly in American Indian populations.

Megan Eppler A graduate student in the Master of Public Health program at Kansas State University. Her general focus is in infectious disease and zoonoses and she hopes to pursue the field of parasitology. She has a passion for aiding populations with limited medical care where parasites are prevalent. The near-eradication of Dracunculus medinensis by the Carter Center inspired her to care for overlooked medical problems, such as entire villages falling blind from Onchocerca volvulus. Megan graduated with a B.S. in Biology and an English minor from Kansas State University.

Susan Alexander - author info Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Alexander is certified as as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Diabetes Management. She has clinical expertise in adult health and internal medicine, and diabetes management. Her reserach interests include health disparities in environmental research and mobile health applications in chronic disease management.

Aaron Naeger - author info Lead aerosol scientist at NASA SPoRT (Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center) where he has developed an aerosol optical depth (AOD) composite product, which merges information from polar-orbiting and geostationary satellite sensors in an effort to provide a comprehensive understanding of the aerosol spatial distribution.

Mike Newchurch - author info Professor in the Atmospheric Science Department at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) where he has been affiliated since 1988. He has taught Atmospheric Chemistry, Photochemical Modeling, Remote Sensing, Atmospheric Dynamics, and Environmental Science.

Deborah Thomson - author info Holds an S&T Policy Fellowship in the Legislative Branch, She is a clinical veterinarian, K-12 educator and curriculum developer, and is also a first responder during natural disasters, a public speaker, a musician, and a One Health advocate.

Interprofessional Education and One Health: Focus onan Offshore Caribbean School

Rohini Roopnarine - author info Associate Professor in Veterinary Epidemiology and Veterinary Public Health at St. George's University since 2008. She has a particular interest in zoonoses and the veterinarian’s role in global health. Her developing interest is in the area of educational research, and she has collaborated with the University of Nottingham, on a research project to evaluate the perceptions of the St. George’s University’s veterinary students on the importance of the One World, One Health, One Medicine initiative.

Cheryl Stroud - author info Dr. Cheryl Stroud, executive director of the One Health Commission, has a primary focus on One Health education, both locally and nationally. She believes strongly in interdisciplinary collaborations and seeks, via the One Health Commission (OHC), to connect One Health stakeholders into active teams, creating strategic networks and partnerships that will educate about all One Health Issues.

More than “Talking the Talk” – Extension Programming and Communication Support One Health

Sandy Procter - author info Assistant professor in Kansas State University’s Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health and a specialist with K-State Research & Extension. As Extension Specialist in Maternal and Child Nutrition, Procter provides leadership and research-based information for local agents and educators across Kansas who program with parents and families. She works with undergraduate and graduate students passionate about hunger, food access and healthful eating. Procter’s interest in community-based nutrition education has taken her to Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia several times since 2008 to work with community health providers striving to improve the nutritional status of rural mothers and children.
