Dr. Jayme Souza-Neto is an Assistant Professor at the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) and Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology within the College of Veterinary Medicine of Kansas State University. Dr. Souza-Neto is also the Head of the Next Generation Sequencing Section of KSVDL and the Assistant Director of the Molecular and Cell Biology Core in the College.
Dr. Souza-Neto is particularly interested in investigating animal and zoonotic pathogens, with focus on the functional genomics of vector-host-pathogen interactions and in the development/implementation of NGS-based tools for pathogen detection and surveillance. Dr. Souza-Neto is committed to developing, implementing and providing outstanding NGS services to support veterinary diagnostics and pathogen identification. NGS services are also extended to the scientific community for a wide range of goals, from whole genome sequencing to transcriptomics.
Dr. Souza-Neto has also played crucial leadership roles during past emerging zoonotic virus outbreaks and epidemics/pandemics (Zika and SARS-CoV-2) and served on several response committees and panels including the GLOPID-R Vector Control Working Group, MRC and CIHR/IDRC Zika panels and the Sao Paulo Zika Virus Research Program, among others, that contributed to set the international scientific community’s response during those events. During his previous appointment as an Assistant Professor at Sao Paulo State University (UNESP), he coordinated the UNESP Genomic Surveillance Network, which supported the State network in tracking SARS-CoV-2 variants and guiding authorities in decision making.
Dr. Souza-Neto is an awardee of innumerous competitive grants and awards, and authored/co-authored several highly cited articles published in prestigious journals like Nature, Science and PNAS. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF), Ph.D. in Genetics from Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) and extensive postdoctoral training from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was a Yong Leader from the Science and Technology in Society forum (2014) and Distinguished Alumnae (2018) from UENF.
