Dr. Brad White obtains $2,446,948 in cumulative research funding to combat bovine respiratory disease By BovineVet online To prevent late day pulmonary disease from developing in cattle with bovine respiratory disease, and to promote antimicrobial stewardship, the International Consortium for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Agriculture (ICASA) has awarded Dr. Brad White a $1,223,474 research grant, plus $1,223,474 in matching funds from eight partner institutions. |
Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons selects Dr. Hanz Coetzee for fellowship Dr. Hans Coetzee, interim vice president for research and University Distinguished Professor of veterinary medicine, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, or RCVS. Their participation will help students in their career development and address the national shortage of rural, food-systems veterinarians. K-State is one of nine schools participating in the Veterinary Workforce Solutions Program. |

CORE group attends Bovine Respiratory Disease Symposium and Academy of Veterinary Consultants Summer Meeting

CORE faculty and students attended the Bovine Respiratory Disease Symposium (BRDS) Aug. 7-8, and the Academy of Veterinary Consultants (AVC) Summer meeting, Aug. 8-10 in Denver, Colorado. Taylor McAtee, Ph.D. candidate (advised by Dr. David Renter), presented, “Treating BRD: Comparing three BRD treatment options in feedlot calves that received tulathromycin metaphylaxis on-arrival" hosted by Merck Animal Health. Dr. David Renter gave a talk on BRD in the context of the sustainability domains and participated in a panel discussion. Dr. Vanessa Horton, Ph.D. candidate (advised by Dr. Natalia Cernicchiaro), presented her poster titled “Understanding bovine respiratory disease (BRD) metaphylaxis practice across U.S. feedlots: a survey of veterinary consultants’ perspectives.” Vanessa won a poster award in the EPSCOR states poster competition.

As we reported above, several CVM researchers participated in the Johnson Cancer Research Center's "Data Blitz" at the K-State Student Union. Above, from left, Drs. Masaki Tamura, Laura Miller and David Poole. Faculty members only received two minutes and two slides to present their information on their research. Event organizers said this was a great way to try to make the faculty figure out how to concisely present their information.
Dr. Jeff Comer, left, also gave a presentation as part of the Data Blitz. In this picture, he is learning about Sarah DeVader's research. Student researchers were invited to present cancer-research-related posters during the event. Sarah is a graduate student (M.S.) under Dr. Tamura.
DVM Job Fair successfully connects employers with K-State DVM students
The annual DVM Job Fair was a grand success, held Saturday, Sept. 21. More than 220 students registered to meet with employers representing more than 70 practices/clinics.

Learning new techniques at the Safe Capture workshop
From Aug. 24-25, Safe Capture Immobilization Training was presented at the CVM. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Academy provided Safe Capture for Animal Training. There were 14 individuals who attended the training sessions for credit, including some guests from outside of the college. Dr. Mark Drew (green shirt), wildlife veterinarian from Boise, Idaho, served as instructor for the course.
