Dr. Phillip Lancaster leads grazing education and conservation for the Flint Hills Dr. Phillip Lancaster is developing resources for grazing education and conservation with the help of a $998,195 grant from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. He seeks to build an education template for U.S. grazing lands, and is one of only 29 projects funded by the Grazing Land Conservation Initiative. |

Frontier students discover historical connections to public health and Sherlock Holmes on national field trip
A group of inquisitive K-State students recently uncovered remarkable historical artifacts connecting the history of public health to the iconic fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. As part of the 43rd Frontier Field Trip, a trio of students traveled to the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland and other sites. |

Third-year student receives Zoetis Foundation Scholarship from the Foundation for the Horse Congrats to third-year student Amanda Bolinger who is one of 10 students nationally, who were awarded with a $10,000 Zoetis Foundation Scholarship as presented by the Foundation for the Horse. This scholarship goes to exemplary veterinary students pursuing careers in equine practice. |

Graduate student receives W.D. Farr Scholarship Dr. Conrad Schelkopf, DMP graduate student, has received the W.D. Farr Scholarship by the National Cattlemen’s Foundation that includes a $15,000 award. This scholarship recognizes outstanding graduate students for academic achievements, leadership and commitment to the advancement of the beef industry. |

Third-year student chosen for national dairy herd scholarship The National Dairy Herd Information Association (DHIA) Scholarship Committee recently selected Serena Schotanus as the 2025 National DHIA Veterinary Student Scholarship recipient. She will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Applicants criteria included involvement in dairy medicine and extra-curricular activities. |

Dr. Susan Nelson warns cat owners about H5N1 risks amid rising cases Veterinary and public health officials are urging cat owners to remain vigilant as cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or H5N1, commonly known as bird flu, have been detected in domestic cats. The CVM's Dr. Susan Nelson emphasizes that there is no need for panic but cautioned that proactive measures should be taken to prevent infections. |

Dr. Ben and Erin Schroeder - DVM 2002 and 2004
Drs. Ben and Erin Schroeder, Hartington, Nebraska, were selected by the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Alumni Association for its 2025 Alumni Recognition Award presented in conjunction with the winter meeting of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association Jan. 30. The award is presented by the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Alumni Association in recognition for the time and effort devoted to advancing veterinary medicine and for being an exemplary role model for future alumni in a professional and community setting. Drs. Brad White and Juergen Richt were selected in February as recipients of the 2024 Roots of Research Award. This prestigious honor celebrates the exceptional research and scholarly contributions of K-State faculty or staff members who have demonstrated sustained and impactful commitment to advancing knowledge in their respective fields. A large group of K-Staters attended the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association winter conference! The CVM combined forces with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and held a joint reception Jan. 30 in Kearney, Nebraska. Approximately 55 people were in attendance! Dr. Grant Pimple, DVM class of 2024, and Dr. Scott Gordon, DVM class of 1990, invited the KSVDL to give a presentation at the Emporia Veterinary Hospital’s annual producer meeting at the end of January. Dr. Gregg Hanzlicek also gave a presentation for the KSVDL in Salina for a meeting hosted by Souther Feeds in February. |

Long-time professor and researcher Dr. Masaaki Tamura passed away, surrounded by family at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas, on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, following a sudden illness. A visitation was held Feb. 1 at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.



Angel Woods is the first veterinary technician in the Veterinary Health Center to complete the Penn Foster program through the VHC partnership. This program is offered to veterinary assistants employed at the Veterinary Health Center to help them gain the education and experience needed to become registered veterinary technicians.
