Our Research Programs
The Laboratory of Vaccine Immunology develops vaccine adjuvants, novel diagnostic assays and vaccines for swine infectious diseases. Specifically, we focus our research on African swine fever (ASF), Streptococcus suis, swine influenza virus (SIV), classical swine fever (CSF), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), and other emerging infectious diseases of swine.
Having worked on research and development projects of veterinary biologics and human biopharmaceuticals at Pfizer for 5 years, Dr. Shi is particularly interested in research initiatives that may reduce the burden of infectious diseases in food animal production. In addition to research projects supported by USDA and DHS, we are working closely with animal health industry partners in the following areas:
-
safety and efficacy testing of experimental vaccines for ASF, CSF, and PRRS;
-
co-development of novel adjuvants for animal vaccines;
-
evaluation of diagnostic tools for swine infectious diseases;
-
evaluation of novel antiviral compounds against swine viral pathogens;
-
evaluation of novel disinfectants against ASFV and other swine viral pathogens.
