Dr. Max Moss - DVM 1966
2026 Distinguished Alumnus Award

Dr. Max Moss, Wichita, Kansas, is the recipient of a 2026 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and its Veterinary Medical Alumni Association. This award, based on outstanding achievements, humanitarian service and contributions to the veterinary profession, is being presented during a luncheon at the 88th Annual Conference for Veterinarians held May 31 in Manhattan, Kansas.
Dr. Moss grew up on a farm near Hoxie, Kansas, and attended Kansas State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1964 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1966. While he was an undergraduate student and first two years of veterinary college, he played basketball and helped K-State earn a pair of Big 8 titles in 1963 and 1964, and, as team captain, he helped lead K-State to the 1964 Final Four. Professionally, he has been a partner in two different veterinary practices in Wichita, Bogue Animal Hospital and Northrock Hospital for Animal, the latter with partner Dr. Alan Schimmels (a 1980 K-State veterinary graduate) and from which he retired from active practice in 2004.
I’m very appreciative of this award and thank the committee for my selection. It’s been an honor to be a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine and to represent the veterinary profession and Kansas State University.
“Dr. Moss has had an impactful career through his years practicing in Wichita,” said Interim Dean Dr. Elizabeth Davis. “He is the middle of three brothers who also graduated from the K-State veterinary college, and he has distinguished himself through his military service and professional service as a longtime veterinarian. He has served on both state and national veterinary associations and has been a tremendous supporter of the Wichita community. We are delighted to recognize him for his many accomplishments.”
After graduating from K-State, Dr. Moss served as a captain in the Air Force Veterinary Corps and was assigned to the 1611th Dispensary at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. He then became a partner at Raritan Hospital for Animals in Edison, New Jersey. He returned to Kansas in 1979 and became a partner at Bogue Animal Hospital in Wichita. In 1985, he became a partner at Northrock until his retirement.
Dr. Moss is a member of the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA), American Veterinary Medical Association and American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). He is past social chairman of the New Jersey Metropolitan Veterinary Medical Association and past president of the Wichita Veterinary Medical Association.
In his community, Dr. Moss is a founding member of the East Wichita Rotary Club, a board member of the Kansas Wildlife Foundation, former trustee of East Heights Methodist Church and past board member of the Crestview Country Club. At K-State, Dr. Moss has served on selection committees for athletic directors and coaches, and he was a member of the Essential Edge Fund for the Kansas State University Foundation. He was inducted into the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame in January 2016.
Dr. Moss’s wife, Penny Heyl Moss, was a K-State cheerleader and graduated in 1964 with a degree in education.
