The U.S.-China Center for Animal Health was established in 2010 at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Its mission is to improve the veterinary training system in China to meet American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accreditation standards and promote U.S.-China research collaboration in combatting emerging and major infectious animal diseases. The center was also a product of the increasing business and cultural exchanges between the U.S. and China at that time.

The concept for the center started when Dr. Jishu Shi, a faculty member at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, attended a Midwest China Hub Commission meeting in St. Louis, Missouri as the university’s representative in December 2009. The commission was exploring ways to export Midwest goods and services to China, which gave him the idea to establish a center for exporting U.S. veterinary education to China. Dr. Shi’s initiative for the U.S.-China Center for Animal Health gained strong support from Dr. Frank Blecha, Head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology, Dean Ralph Richardson, College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Daniel Richardson, Chief Executive Officer of K-State Olathe Innovation Campus, as well as the university leadership, and it quickly became a reality in May 2010.

One important goal of the center was to train the “trainers” for Chinese veterinary medicine by bringing top Chinese students to the U.S. to study veterinary medicine. The idea was for these Chinese DVMs to teach the next generations of veterinarians in universities after their return to China. To achieve this goal, the center worked closely with China Scholarship Council, Pfizer Animal Health (now Zoetis), Chinese Veterinary Medical Association, and China Agricultural University in seeking conceptual support and resources for this initiative. In 2012, the U.S.-China Joint DVM Scholarship Program was established. When the first group of Chinese students entered the program in the fall of 2012, Dr. Lei Wang, then a faculty member of the Department of Anatomy & Physiology, was appointed by Dean Richardson to join the center and manage this education program.

The U.S.-China Center for Animal Health administers the U.S.-China Joint Scholarship program daily, including program promotion in China, student selection, assisting students with their DVM application, summer internships, and tuition payment. In addition, the center organizes annual homecoming events and secures funding support for the program.
