Service
I serve the greater community of public health, food and agriculture, education and research through active participation and service on local, state, national and international boards of organizations relevant to my areas of expertise. I have represented the United States on several European Union – U.S. food safety initiatives evaluating science policy as related to foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance; I currently serve on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AGISAR).
Teaching
I teach the advanced epidemiological methods and data analysis to graduate students, as well as contributing to the DVM teaching of epidemiology, food safety, and public health. I also teach a course on disease detection, surveillance, and risk asssessment for animal health and food safety applications.
Research
My expertise centers on valid analytical and descriptive epidemiologic study design, conduct, and analysis in both public health and veterinary fields. I am particularly interested in applying empirical data arising from appropriately designed field studies to developing models of the microbial ecology of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance in food production systems. My present research interests include: food safety issues such as pre-harvest ecology and management of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and foodborne enteric pathogens, the epidemiology of Johne's disease (Mycobacterium avium subsp.paratuberculosis) in ruminants, decision-support systems for emerging and zoonotic disease defense, and studying the potential impacts of global climate and ecosystem changes on animal and human health.
