Research
Dr. Clavijo main research focus includes development and validation of novel diagnostic assays for transboundary animal diseases and zoonoses. Dr. Clavijo has a broad experience in laboratory diagnosis of Foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, classical swine fever and other transboundary animal diseases. He has develop a number of diagnostic assay including a reliable and rapid test to detect antibodies against the conserved, nonstructural proteins (NSPs) of Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) to distinguish infected animals from vaccinated animals. His current work includes the development of novel serological assays for the diagnosis of Rift Valley Fever (RVF), African swine fever (ASF) and Classical swine fever (CSF). He is also developing new methodologies for the evaluation of population immunity to FMDV vaccination and confirmatory tests for FMDV and ASF.
During his professional career, Dr. Clavijo have taken a number of important assignments including, senior science advisor at the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases (IIAD), advisor for Diagnosis, Surveillance and Control of Zoonotic and Emerging Diseases at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) /WHO (Brazil), Associate Director for Scientific Programs at the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL), Head of the Vesicular Disease Unit at National Center for Foreign Animal Diseases (Canada) and Technical Advisor in Foot-and-Mouth Disease for the Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA) (Brazil).
