Research Interests
David Poole is recognized internationally for his contributions to the fields of pulmonary gas exchange and skeletal muscle structure/function relationships. He has published over 350 peer reviewed papers and reviews in journals such as Circulation Research, Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Physiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, FUNCTION and the British Medical Journal. Dr. Poole regularly presents his work before national and international scientific audiences. As Principal Investigator he has received over $6 million in funding with $31 million as Co-Investigator to examine the limitations to oxygen transport from lungs to mitochondria. This work has provided unique insights into healthy function and the pathophysiology associated with major disease conditions such as emphysema, diabetes, chronic heart failure and potentially cancer.
Dr. Poole's laboratory is currently funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the K-State Johnson Cancer Research Center and encourages a vibrant scientific atmosphere which stimulates productive interactions among faculty and students. Foremost among his collaborators at K-State, Dr. Poole wishes to acknowledge the significant contributions of Dr. Thomas J. Barstow, Dr. Timothy I. Musch, Dr. Howard H. Erickson, Dr. M. Roger Fedde, Dr. Casey A. Kindig and Dr. Brad J. Behnke.
Dr. Poole holds the Coffman Chair for Distinguished University Undergraduate Teaching Scholars. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Physiological Society (APS). Dr. Poole won the ACSM’s Citation Award in 2019 and his distinguished lectureships include: E.F. Adolph (APS 2018), J.B. Wolffe (ACSM 2021), Historical Lecture (APS 2022). His current h-index is 84 with over 26,000 citations.
In collaboration with Professor Andrew M. Jones of Manchester Metropolitan University in England, Dr. Poole has published a textbook entitled: "Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Sport, Exercise and Medicine": Routledge, London and New York, 2005, ISBN #-0-415-30560-8 (hardback) and 0-415-30561-6 (softback).
