VTPRK scholars tour veterinary practices and livestock facilities in southwest Kansas

Eight scholars from the Veterinary Training Program for Rural Kansas (VTPRK) program at the College of Veterinary Medicine visited veterinary practices and livestock facilities in southwest Kansas during the week of May 13 to May 17. This trip allowed the VTPRK students to interact with different veterinarians, practices and clients.

US-China joint veterinary program at K-State celebrates eighth graduating class, 10th annual homecoming event

K-State veterinarians perform record-breaking number of eye exams for Kansas service animals

Dr. Amy Rankin, professor of ophthalmology, performs an eye exam on a service animal. Rankin was a member of a Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine outreach team that performed nearly 80 eye exams for service and working military dogs around the state this May.A record-breaking number of Kansas service animals are now cleared for their vital work, thanks to the ophthalmology team at the Veterinary Health Center. They gave free exams during the ACVO/Epicur Pharma National Service Animal Eye Exam event in May.

New discovery: Fusobacterium varium in liver abscesses of beef cattle

The National Agricultural Biosecurity Center at K-State recently facilitated a campus-wide engagement to help improve awareness, coordination and preparedness for how a foreign animal disease will directly impact the university's ability to continue research, teaching and service involving livestock.

CVM's Dr. Hans Coetzee appointed interim vice president for research

Following an internal search, K-State has appointed Dr. Hans Coetzee, university distinguished professor of anatomy and physiology, as interim vice president for research, effective June 24. Dr. Coetzee is currently associate dean for research and graduate programs and head of the department of anatomy and physiology in the CVM.

Preparing 4-H Fair projects: K-State experts advise on animal care and training techniques

The Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute offers guidance on ensuring positive learning experiences for 4-H participants with their animals. On a recent Cattle Chat podcast, K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster emphasized the importance of starting with a feeding plan. He said a common mistake is underfeeding or overfeeding market animals.

Congratulations to Dr. Lilli Heinen and her co-author mentoring team of Drs. Brad White, David Amrine and Robert Larson as Dr. Heinen was the 2024 recipient of an Outstanding AJVR Student Manuscript Award. The manuscript is entitled, “Evaluation of predictive models to determine final outcome for feedlot cattle based on information available at first treatment for bovine respiratory disease.”

The late Dr. Warren Beard was honored posthumously with the 2024 Outstanding Alumnus Award from Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Please watch this incredible video honoring Dr. Beard's life, career and well-deserved honor:

Drs. Eduarda Mazzardo Bortoluzzi and Brad White received $24,212 from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners for their study, “Comparing the use of lidocaine-loaded bands to reduce pain and discomfort in dairy and beef-dairy claves.”

Field trial clubs meetings include K-State faculty

The Amateur Field Trial Clubs of American Region 17 and Kansas Field Trial Clubs Association held their summer meetings and awards ceremony Saturday June 8 at the Volland Foundation, in Alma, Kansas. Dr. Jeba Jesudoss Chelladurai was invited by incoming Region 17 President Dr. Laura Miller to speak to the audience of amateur and professional pointing dog trainers and handlers from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. Dr. Chelladurai's presentation on "Treatment and control of parasites in dogs" was enjoyable and informative, stimulating many questions from the audience. The presentation brought attention to the work done by the VDL. Some young attendees asked questions about admission to K-State CVM.
