Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases

The Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases develops innovative countermeasures against high-priority foreign, emerging and zoonotic diseases that threaten human and animal health.

The center has formed a wide network of scientific researchers involving ten universities, several federal laboratories and veterinary biologics companies with K-State as lead institution.

With more than $24 million secured in research funding, the center conducts research, develops technology and trains a workforce to defend U.S. agricultural systems against agro-terrorism, emerging animal pathogens and other catastrophic events.

The novel avian H7N9 influenza virus has caused more than 130 human infections with 43 deaths in China. New research, conducted under the supervision of Kansas State University's Juergen Richt, is showing promise in helping to fight this deadly virus.
