MCB Next-Generation Sequencing Core
The MCB-Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Core Lab at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine provides essential sequencing support and services for researchers at KSU and other institutions. Established in 2020 as part of the Center on Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (CEZID) to support junior researchers, the Core has since grown to offer comprehensive assistance, from initial consultation to advanced sequencing.
Our Services and Technology
Our services cover the entire sequencing workflow, including nucleic acid quality control, library preparation, and sequencing. We utilize both short- and long-read sequencing technologies from leading platforms like Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
We have well-established protocols for a wide range of applications, including:
- Whole Genome Sequencing
- Total RNA and mRNA Sequencing
- Metagenomic
- 16S sequencing (V3 and V4)
- Amplicon Target Sequencing
- ChIP-Seq
We can also collaborate with you to develop custom protocols to meet your specific research needs.

Spatial Omics
In 2024, we expanded our capabilities with the acquisition of two state-of-the-art spatial omics platforms: GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler and CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager. These technologies allow researchers to take the next step in transcriptomics and proteomics studies by providing spatial context to molecular data.
- GeoMx DSP: This platform performs non-destructive RNA and/or protein analysis on fresh or FFPE tissue sections. The data can provide critical insights into biomarker discovery, tumor microenvironment profiling, drug mechanisms, disease progression, and more.
- Researchers can select from a range of pre-validated panels, including the Whole Transcriptome Atlas for unbiased discovery, or targeted panels like the Cancer Transcriptome Atlas and Immuno-Oncology Protein Panels to focus on specific research areas. We also have the capability to develop custom assays to match your unique project needs.
- CosMx SMI: This technology enables single-cell in situ analysis. It's ideal for identifying mechanisms of cell behavior and response, discovering biomarkers, and understanding biological processes at a subcellular level.
- We offer high-plex RNA panels such as the Whole Transcriptome Atlases, Human 1K and 6K Discovery Panels and the Universal Cell Characterization Panels for comprehensive cell typing, as well as targeted protein assays to analyze immune cell populations in situ. This technology allows you to map cell interactions and cellular processes with incredible precision.
In addition to the Spatial instruments, the Leica Bond RXm is available to support the slide preparation for spatial studies increasing our capabilities to prepare a higher number of slides at once.
