Dissertation Research

My dissertation research examines how adult learners in higher education understand and assign epistemic authority to generative artificial intelligence. Specifically, I am interested in why people may treat AI as a knowledgeable participant rather than simply an information-producing tool, particularly when AI can convincingly mimic the language and behaviors associated with human knowing without participating in the accountability, vulnerability, and social consequences traditionally associated with claims to knowledge. My research explores how factors such as epistemic fatigue, trust, critical reflection, and perceived AI fluency influence verification practices and the delegation of intellectual work to AI. More broadly, this work considers what generative AI may reveal about how humans recognize, negotiate, and assign authority to those we consider “knowers.”
