Dr. Brian Lubbers to lead clinical sciences department

The College of Veterinary Medicine has appointed Dr. Brian Lubbers to serve as interim department head of clinical sciences. Dr. Lubbers currently teaches pharmacology and beef production medicine courses, advises graduate students, and serves on departmental, college and university committees. He is a contributing member of the Beef Cattle Institute.

All-University Awards include trio from veterinary college

The offices of the president and provost hosted the All-University Awards Ceremony May 8 in the K-State Alumni Center Banquet Room, handing out more than 30 awards altogether.

Dr. Amachawadi recognized with Zoetis veterinary research excellence award

The CVM presented the 2025
Dr. William and Deanna Pritchard Veterinary Service and Outreach Award to Dr. Daniela Hernandez, clinical assistant professor in DMP. This was created in 2012 to recognize an outstanding faculty member that through their service and outreach, contributes to the advancement of the veterinary profession.

Meet the outstanding faculty scholars shaping K-State as a next-gen land-grant university

Dr. Laura Miller, associate professor of virology, immunology and genomics, is one of eleven professors to be named University Outstanding Scholars. Created in 2024 within the K-State strategic plan, this prestigious honor underscores the university's commitment to fostering a talented workforce, advancing groundbreaking research and enhancing excellence.

Disasters can strike without warning, and being prepared can mean the difference between chaos and calm for both you and your pets. In recognition of National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, Kansas State University veterinarian Dr. Susan Nelson encourages pet owners to take time now to ensure their animals are protected in an emergency.

The CVM invites elementary, middle school, high school and college students to explore the world of veterinary medicine at the 2025 Vet Med ROCKS summer camps. The series of day camps for youth will take place July 28-30 and are hosted by the Vet Med Recruitment and Outreach Club.

Congratulations to the class of 2025 who recieved their DVMs on Friday, May 16, 2025!

Dr. Brian Lubbers spoke to five classes of second graders at Pray-Woodman elementary in Maize, Kansas, on April 5. The classes have adopted dairy heifers, so Dr. Lubbers presented on the history of cattle, the benefits of cattle domestication, cow “facts” and the differences between people and cows.

Dr. Ron Orchard and Cassidy Moreau presented, “Compassionate Care: Understanding Substance Use Disorder in Veterinary Clients” at the Lunch and Learn on April 22.

Dr. Hans Coetzee, an internationally recognized expert in livestock pain management, has been appointed vice president for research at K-State, following a national search. Dr. Coetzee, who is also a university distinguished professor in K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine, had been serving as interim vice president since summer 2024.

The Shelter Medicine team traveled to Nebraska for a semi-annual outreach effort at the Santee Sioux Reservation April 25-27. The team provided preventative medicine, spay/neuter and wellness exams to the underserved community. They saw 134 patients (96 dogs and 38 cats) and performed 18 surgeries.

Shelter Medicine has spayed/neutered over 50K animals!

The Shelter Medicine team is officially over 50,000 animals spayed/neutered since the program began in 2015. Bean, who has already been adopted, was seen by fourth-year student Cierra Lohr at the Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in Manhattan. Veterinary Nurse Catherine Lowry assisted.

This is How We Role team participated in the April 26, Kansas Science Festival at the Manhattan Public Library. Veterinary students and faculty were able to reach kids and families all about fleas! The booth engaged kids with reading, writing, math, and long-jump, to compare their athletic prowess to that of a flea!

They were third-year students, but now they are fourth-year students, each presented with the official white coats to wear in the Veterinary Health Center during clinical rotations in their final year of studies.
