Veterinary Medical Library offers internship program for students
By Rylee Coy

The Veterinary Medical Library has established an internship program open to Kansas State University and Emporia State University students who are interested in research, veterinary literary research and medical librarianship.
The program, first launched in 2024, was a long-time vision of the library’s director, Andi Warren. It was created to help students discover their own research abilities, strengthen existing skills and broaden their understanding of veterinary literary research and the field of medical librarianship. The internship has quickly become a sought-after opportunity, with positions filled through spring 2027.
“Each semester, including summer, one student intern is selected to design and carry out a major project,” Warren said. “These projects vary by interest, but all emphasize research, information literacy and the ability to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.”
Past interns have designed and submitted a full IACUC research protocol, created a training presentation for student employees in library settings and developed a research study with the goal of publication, moving through every stage from design to revision.
Beyond their projects, interns gain hands-on experience by sitting in on IACUC meetings, where they learn firsthand about the ethical standards and rigorous processes that shape veterinary research. They also join the director in meetings, classes and research consultations, supporting the library’s work with students, faculty and staff across the College of Veterinary Medicine.
“At its heart, the internship is about showcasing student talent and investing in their future careers,” Warren said. “We are honored to provide a space where students can grow as researchers, scholars and professionals, and we are proud to see the enthusiasm and demand for this program continue to grow.”
The library recruits primarily through Handshake [recruiting and career services platform for K-State students, alumni and employers], and by sharing information within departments such as agriculture/pre-vet, psychology, leadership studies and English, though the internship is not limited to any one area of study. The opportunity is also advertised through Emporia State University’s Master of Library Science program.
Applicants must be actively enrolled at either Kansas State or Emporia State. The internship may be taken for academic credit, depending on the student’s degree requirements. The position is paid $11 per hour, and students may work up to 30 hours per week, with flexibility built around their class schedule and credit-hour needs. This internship is not available to veterinary students but is open to pre-veterinary students.
