Two puppies in training, named for Kansas State University athletics legends, are being welcomed at the College of Veterinary Medicine — although not as patients in the Veterinary Health Center. In cooperation with Kansas Specialty Dog Service, or KSDS, Assistance Dogs Inc., the two service dogs, Snyder and Ohlde, are part of a new student community service initiative.

A new lecture series honoring a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine will launch at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Auditorium between Trotter and Mosier halls. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the atrium. The inaugural lecturer will be Mark Hutchinson, director of the Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Two K-State faculty receive $5,000 Iman Awards for teaching and research

Two Kansas State University faculty members, one from the College of Business Administration and one from the College of Veterinary Medicine, will each receive a $5,000 award in recognition of their outstanding teaching and research during a ceremony at the K-State Alumni Center. The ceremony will take place Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. The recipient of the Iman Outstanding Faculty Award for Research is Hans Coetzee, BVSc., Ph.D., university distinguished professor and head of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology. Dawn R. Deeter, Ph.D., J.J. Vanier Distinguished Chair in Relational Selling and Marketing and director of the National Strategic Selling Institute, will receive the Iman Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching.

Homecoming spotlights camaraderie of U.S.-China Joint Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program

The old expression "two heads are better than one" took on new meaning this year at the annual celebration of the U.S.-China Joint Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program at Kansas State University in May. This year's graduates were asked to bring a friend so each could share anecdotes about the value of friendship while tackling the challenges of completing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, especially for the Chinese students for whom English is a second language.

Researchers successfully test first vaccine to prevent bovine anaplasmosis

A new study involving the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University is paving the way forward in controlling a devastating and costly cattle disease: bovine anaplasmosis. The research, "Targeted mutagenesis in Anaplasma marginale to define virulence and vaccine development against bovine anaplasmosis," was published in May by scientists from K-States's diagnostic medicine and pathobiology department in PLOS Pathogens, a high-impact scientific journal.

Knowledge of the role of veterinary medicine in American history has helped two Kansas State University veterinary students win third- and fourth-place honors in the 2022 Smithcors essay contest sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical History Society. Hadley Watson and Nathan Jackson, both third-year veterinary students, placed in the 2022 Smithcors essay contest, and earned cash prizes.

Veterinary Health Center team vaccinates animals for COVID-19 at Manhattan's Sunset Zoo

This spring, Kansas State University zoo veterinarians and staff from the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan joined forces to get many of the zoo's animals protected against COVID-19. Dr. Sara Gardhouse, assistant professor of exotic pet, wildlife and zoological medicine, said the COVID-19 vaccine for zoo animals is slightly different than the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for humans.

The Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine hosted its 2022 Senior Banquet on May 10 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The college presented approximately $160,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors, with 74 awards presented, some to multiple recipients.

K-State receives $1.5 million grant for food, agriculture and veterinary defense project

The National Agricultural Biosecurity Center at Kansas State University is receiving a more than $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect the nation's food supply. With the grant from DHS's Food, Agriculture and Veterinary Defense Division, the center will seek ways to support the production and economic health of the food and agricultural sectors and sustain human health through a stable and resilient food and agricultural supply chain.

Veterinary student publishes report on successful radiation treatment for cockatoo

A Kansas State University veterinary student has written and published a case report in a prestigious journal about successful radiation treatment received by a Major Mitchell's cockatoo at the K-State Veterinary Health Center. "Successful radiation treatment of undertail fibrosarcoma in a Major Mitchell's cockatoo (Lophochroa leadbeateri)" was written by Daria Hinkle, fourth-year veterinary student, Wichita, and published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Veterinary research finds destressing benefit from feeding cattle industrial hemp

A new study by Kansas State University finds that feeding cattle industrial hemp may have a beneficial effect on their welfare: a reduction in stress and increasing the times when they lie down. "Cattle experience a variety of stress and inflammation," said Dr. Michael Kleinhenz, assistant professor of beef production medicine at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, along with the KSU Pre-Veterinary Club and the Veterinary Voyagers, hosted these students for the annual symposium of the American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association, or APVMA, March 11-12. K-State last hosted the symposium in 2002, and previously in 1987 and 1996.

Severe weather season is approaching and Dr. Susan Nelson, veterinarian and clinical professor at the Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine, says to include pets in your family emergency preparedness plans. "Pets should never be left at home during an emergency evacuation," Dr. Nelson said. "Creating a disaster plan for your pet entails the same steps taken to make your family plan."
