  • Pharmacokinetics of selected antibiotics and analgesics in exotic animals
  • Medicine and management of captive exotic animals
  • Physiologic and pathologic characteristics of selected species
  • Parasites and diseases of exotic animals, wildlife, and zoo animals

  • Training of veterinary students and interns in the medicine, captive management, and diseases of companion exotic animals, wildlife, and zoo animals.

Professional Accomplishments and Awards

  • Dr. Carpenter has been a clinical and research veterinarian for over 40 years in the field of exotic animal, wildlife (including endangered species), and zoo animal medicine.
  • Assisted in developing an internationally-recognized program in Zoological Medicine at KSU, and has trained 38 Interns and Residents.
  • Author of over 170 scientific papers, 40 book chapters, and 240 proceedings articles, and is Co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2012) and is the Editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary (2013).
  • Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery and former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine.
  • Past-President of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (1998-1999), the Association of Avian Veterinarians (2006-2007), and the American College of Zoological Medicine (2008-2009).
  • Awarded the Edwin J. Frick Professorship in Veterinary Medicine from the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 and the Emil Dolensek Award by the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians in 2004.
  • Selected as the Exotic DVM of the Year for 2000 and the T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year for 2012.
  • Named an Alumni of the Year by the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009.
  • In 2013, the Veterinary Health Center named the new veterinary facility at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo the “James W. Carpenter Clinic at Sunset Zoo”.
  • Awarded both the E.R. Frank Award by the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association and the KSU Distinguished Service Award in 2016.
