Visiting Students

Policies and Procedures for Visiting Veterinary Students, Veterinarians and Other Approved Students to the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Purpose:
The College of Veterinary Medicine receives many requests each year from students from veterinary colleges and veterinarians around the world to complete externships of 3 to 15 weeks duration within the KSU-Veterinary Health Center or the Hill's National Practice Management Center. The goals of most of these students are to gain specialized expertise and/or to fulfill externship requirements for graduation. Visiting students or veterinarians add diversity to the College's academic programs by bringing experiences and points of view from their home institutions and nations, and the visitors, and the College's faculty and students gain from these visits.

These policies and procedures are established to allow visiting students and veterinarians to participate in this College's curriculum or academic programs. Visiting veterinary students, veterinarians or other approved students shall be herein-designated "visitor(s)."

Policies:

  1. Visitors will be accepted on as space and resources permit. Visitors will not be given priority over any KSU veterinary student for a position in the College's curriculum or other academic programs.

  2. Visitors will be accepted only after being approved for admission to a specific program for a specified time by the responsible faculty member, appropriate department head and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

  3. Visitors will be accepted for a specific program for a specified time period.

  4. Visitors will participate in a specified program according to a protocol established by the faculty member in charge, e.g. in a clinical rotation this may include emergency duties, ICU duties and other duties specified by the faculty member in charge. The supervising faculty member will be responsible for arranging and overseeing their assignments.

  5. Visitors in this program will not receive KSU academic credit. The visitor may receive academic credit from their home institution for the externship at KSU.

  6. Visitors will be expected to adhere to the guidelines published in the College Student Handbook and if assigned to the KSU-Veterinary Health Center, they shall adhere to the Senior Teaching Hospital Handbook. This includes, but is not restricted to, the ethical and professional standards set forth by the College for students and faculty.

Procedures:

  1. Visitors must make application to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs for KSU College of Veterinary Medicine programs at least 4 months prior to the anticipated starting time by sending a letter of interest clearly stating the goals to be completed while visiting KSU, official transcripts (in English) of all academic work in veterinary medicine, and a complete resume.

Under specific circumstances, the College may waive this fee. All fees must be paid or waived prior to the time a visitor starts their studies at KSU.

This fee will be deposited by the College in a restricted fee account in the KSU Continuing Education Division. The fee remaining after the Continuing Education processing-fee has been deducted shall be made available to the participating department which shall in most instances make said fee available to faculty responsible for the visitor program. All such fees shall be spent in accordance to standard University guidelines.

  4. Upon arrival at KSU, the visitor shall be issued a pictorial identification badge. The visitor must wear the badge whenever they are within the College's facilities.

These evaluations include a written summary by faculty of the visitor's academic performance and progress at KSU. These evaluation forms shall be distributed in the same manner with copies going to: 1) the Dean's Office, 2) Departmental Office, 3) faculty member in charge, 4) visitor, and 5) to the visitor's institution if requested by the visitor.
