Boyd, James E., DVM, age 71, Feb. 24, 2004, Bellevue. Dr. James Erwin Boyd cared for people's animals. He cared for people. The Bellevue veterinarian died Tuesday of cancer.

He touched so many people's live by the compassionate care he gave their pets and the compassion he showed them," said Dr. Karen Campbell, who practiced with Boyd for 23 years. "He was a forward thinker who continually strived to improve himself and his practice."

Survived by wife, Inez; children, Victoria Boyd-Kennedy and husband Brad Kennedy, Lexington, KY, Curtis and wife Louisa, El Paso, TX, Kristen Lynne and husband Douglas Hellman, Island Lake, IL; sister, Erma and husband Milton Stade, Manhattan, KS; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Samuel Boyd, Zachary and Caroline Hellman. Preceded in death by parents, Elizabeth and Earl Boyd; brother, Earl; sister, Elisabeth Hagar. From 1958 until 1961 he served as a Captain in the USAF, Base Veterinarian at Oxnard AFB, CA. In 1963 he established the Bellevue Animal Hospital, an AAHA accredited hospital. This was moved to the newly built hospital at 10410 South 25 St., Bellevue in 1984. He served on the Bellevue Board of Education from 1976 to 1988, serving as vice president and 2 years as president of the board. He established an Explorer Post of Veterinary Medicine for the Boy Scouts of America. He was appointed to the Nebraska Board of Veterinary Examiners and served 2 terms from 1986 until 1996.
