Research Interests
As with humans, no two animals are exactly alike in how they ‘handle’ a drug. The goal of Dr. Martinez’s research program is to understand the mechanisms underlying species, breed and interindividual differences in drug metabolism and how these differences affect drug response in veterinary species. Dr. Martinez is particularly interested in the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme system. Her ultimate aim is to advance the safety and efficacy of therapeutics in veterinary medicine through precision (or individualized) medicine. To achieve this aim, Dr. Martinez’s laboratory uses translational approaches that integrate basic and clinical research ranging from in vitro recombinant protein expression and functional analysis to in vivo pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies.
Dr. Martinez encourages motivated students with an interest in veterinary pharmacology to contact her about available opportunities in her laboratory.
