Parking
-
Parking permits can be
obtained at the Parking Services building, which is located just
across Dennison street from the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital. If you order your parking permit through
KATS in advance, the cost of
the parking permit is just added to your tuition, and you will
be able to pick up your permit at Parking Services after a
designated date. If you don’t order your permit in advance, you
can still go and get a parking permit at any time, but you will
have to wait until after the designated date, pay for it at the
time, and you may end up waiting in line for a while.
-
The standard parking
permit will allow you to park in O, T, and Z marked lots. If the
main veterinary student parking lot behind the vet school is
full, you can also park in the parking lot of the Parking
Services building, in the Rec Center Parking lot, or in the
general lot to the east of the vet school student parking lot.
You cannot park in the parking lot in front of the VMTH during
open clinic hours. However, you can park in that lot from
5pm-7am Monday thru Saturday, and all day on Sunday.
Dress code
-
Dress code for classes is
casual. You may wear whatever you would like to classes,
including jeans, t-shirts, shorts, etc. However, keep in mind
that visitors and tour groups routinely go through the vet
school, and that you are representing your school to them in the
way that you dress. (And you will make Dr. Elmore really happy
if you dress professionally.)
-
Dress code for anything
over in the clinic that would have you interacting with clients
(such as shadowing a senior) requires professional dress. Nice
slacks and a nice shirt are acceptable. White coats are not
necessary except for seniors. Scrubs are required only if you
will be in surgery rooms at any point. Jeans are acceptable only
in large animal areas (although khakis are preferred). If
you aren’t sure, it is best to check with someone in the area
you will be in.
E-Mail
-
All veterinary students
are given a veterinary school e-mail address. Your e-mail
address is generally composed of your first initial followed by
the first seven letters of your last name, @vet.k-state.edu. To
access your school e-mail account, go to the main page,
www.vet.k-state.edu,
and click on GroupWise Web Access on the lower right hand side
of the screen. It will ask you for your user name and password.
Your user name is the same as your e-mail address, your first
initial followed by the first seven letters of your last name.
Your password is your social security number.
-
To send e-mail to other
students or to faculty when you don’t know their e-mail address,
or to send a mass e-mail, you can use the address book in your
e-mail. Simply click on the little address book icon on the left
hand side of your screen. Follow the directions in the address
book. If you want to do a search of the entire address book,
just leave the begins with slot blank, and scroll down in the
number of names to display to 200, and then just hit next at the
bottom of your screen for each next group of names. If you want
to send a mass e-mail, just look up the name of the group that
you want to send it to. For example, to send an e-mail to the
entire class of 2006, just double click on Class2006, or click
on it to highlight it, and then click on the To: button on the
right hand side of the screen. To get back to composing an
e-mail after selecting the recipients, click on the Mail button
at the upper right.
Laptop Computers
-
All of the desks in the
student labs have network hookups that will enable you to hook
up a laptop computer to the KSUCVM computer network. Wireless
network is also available in all of the student labs and in the
vet med library. If you
don’t currently have a laptop computer, but are planning on
purchasing one, check out the suggested requirements at
www.vet.ksu.edu/admit/comppur.htm before purchasing a
laptop. First year students beginning with the Class of 2011
will be required to have a laptop computer; however
many students find that it can make things easier. There are also 3 computers in each student lab for student use.
-
Once you have obtained a
laptop computer, along with required network hookups as
suggested on the requirements page, you will need to have the
necessary programming installed so that you are able to use the
KSUCVM network. To do this, simply take your laptop along with
hookups to the computing office, which is on the fourth floor of
Trotter Hall, next to the library, and they will take your
laptop for a day or two and put all necessary programming on it
for you.
-
The KSUCVM Computing and
Technical Support (CaTS), also has a very informative website
that covers most other computing questions you may have at
www.vet.ksu.edu/depts/cats/index.htm.
Class
Notes and Books
-
At the beginning of each
semester, you will pick up your notes for that semester in the
library. (Only for classes prior to Class of 2011. All classes
after the Class of 2010 will be issued a tablet with the notes
in digital format on the tablets.) All of your
classes will provide you with preprinted notes, either copies of
their PowerPoint presentations, or narrative notes. As a result,
you will probably need several 3-ring binders for your classes,
rather than ruled notebooks and folders. You may wish to take
additional notes, and many people do, but overall, about 90% of
testable material will be in your preprinted notes.
-
You will also be given a
list of books that are required or suggested for your classes.
Even though many of your classes will have required books, for
those of you who are trying to cut costs, you will not
necessarily use every book that is required. In addition, many
classes (not all) will make the required books available on
reserve up in the library. Many students choose to purchase all
required books as they feel they may use them as future
reference books. But, if you are trying to save money, and only
want to purchase the books that you will absolutely need, you
may want to check with several upperclassmen, or e-mail
scavma@vet.ksu.edu to
find out which books are most utilized.
