K-State Veterinary Research Scholars Program

General Information

The faculty and administration at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to training veterinary students in comparative biomedical research. To achieve this goal, several funding mechanisms are used to organize and provide a summer research-training program for first and second year veterinary students. For the past several years, grant support from the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health has provided the foundation for our Veterinary Research Scholars training program. In addition, a grant from the Merial Research Grants Program, and department and college support allow us to provide competitive scholarships for 10 students who are attending US Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and 2 students who are attending Veterinary College outside the US.

The Veterinary Research Scholars program is an intensive research-oriented experience directed towards attracting our most talented professional students into biomedical research careers. In particular, the program exposes veterinary students to critical thinking processes inherent to hypothesis-driven research activities, methodologies involved in design and execution of laboratory experiments and multicenter clinical trials, and ethical issues pertinent to biomedical research.

Veterinary Research Scholars participate in the 3-month program beginning mid May and concluding mid August. The program consists of mentored research training by program faculty and weekly research workshops. The summer stipend is approximately $2,000 per month for the 3-month duration of the program.
