The Department of Anatomy and Physiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Kansas State University is inviting applications for the position of Department Head. The Department seeks a candidate of international stature interested in leading an outstanding research and teaching faculty while contributing to the scientific direction of the Department.
Applicants must possess a doctoral degree and a distinguished record of scientific research, extramural funding, administrative and leadership skills and a commitment to education and academic excellence.
The successful candidate will be eligible for the title of Professor, with tenure, and approval as a K-State Graduate Faculty member. The Department Head will oversee departmental strategic planning to foster anticipated growth. The selected individual will have the opportunity to recruit faculty and shape the research focus of the Department. The Department Head will administer the teaching, research, and service programs of the department, as well as the curriculum taught by the department faculty in the CVM (112 students/class year) and graduate programs (3-5 MS; 12-15 PhD). The successful candidate will participate in the research mission of the college with his/her own extramurally-funded research program.
The Department of Anatomy and Physiology (29 faculty) emphasizes funded biomedical research and provides professional and graduate (MS/PhD) education in the areas of Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology, Veterinary Anatomy, Physiology, Immunology, Pharmacology and Toxicology.
The Department has excellent physical facilities for research that include specialized core laboratories; Cellular and Molecular Biology, Confocal Microscopy, and Image Analysis. The Department houses a number of research centers and institutes: Center for Epithelial Research, the Midwest Institute for Comparative Stem Cell Biotechnology, and the new centers of Nanotechnology Innovation Center of Kansas State (NICKS) and Institute of Computational Comparative Medicine (ICCM). Significant opportunities for research collaboration exist with other CVM departments and units including the Beef Cattle Institute, the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Disease, the US-China Center for Animal Health, and across K-State including the Terry C Johnson Cancer Research Center, the Biosecurity Research Institute, the Gene Expression Facility, the Biotechnology Core Facility, and the Food and Security Center.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD or other earned doctoral degree in biomedical sciences or a related discipline. The successful candidate must have a history of, and continuing success in, obtaining extramural funding in support of research. In addition, he or she must be able to communicate effectively at all levels of the university, industry, and private sectors; lead the department’s broad, multidisciplinary programs; and be committed strongly to graduate student recruiting and the professional development of faculty, staff, and students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in an academic setting at a College of Veterinary Medicine or at a Health Sciences Center is preferred. Experience in fiscal and personnel management is also desired.
