The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications from board-certified veterinarians for the position of Head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The department has broad service, educational, and research missions. It is responsible for providing "state-of-the-art" care for pets and zoo animals as well as pre-clinical and clinical instruction in anesthesiology, avian and zoological medicine, dermatology, emergency and critical care medicine, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, physical therapy, soft tissue surgery, and radiology. The department directs residency training programs in most clinical specialties and has rotating internships. The department has a strong commitment to clinical research and post-graduate training to improve pet health. Most departmental faculty have active research programs, and many house officers contribute to these programs. The successful candidate is expected to hold the DVM or equivalent degree, be board-certified and have knowledge and appreciation for the range of activities of veterinary academicians and staff, and national reputation for excellence in a professional and/or research discipline. The department head must energetically mentor faculty through tenure, promotion, and the cumulative review process, and promote professional development of departmental staff and faculty. The department head will be expected to effectively manage departmental personnel, academic and clinical budgets, and other resources including equipment. The head must provide leadership for departmental clinical and didactic teaching, research, and service missions, be an advocate for and promote the public image of the department, and direct faculty recruitment, Preferred qualifications include a record of achievement that warrants appointment as a full professor and an advanced degree. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a vision complementary to the departmental vision, mission statements, and the strategic plans of the College of Veterinary Medicine are required. The head serves for a five year term that may be renewed. Anticipated starting date is January 1, 2009.
