In the necropsy laboratory, complete postmortem examinations (necropsies) are performed under the supervision of board certified pathologists on all carcasses submitted for necropsy. A gross necropsy includes an external examination of the animal and an examination of the internal organs including those of the respiratory system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, urogenital system, endocrine system and brain. The spinal cord and peripheral nerves may also be examined if indicated by the animal’s history.
Ancillary tests will be performed under the discretion of the pathologist to determine the cause of death or clinical signs unless specific tests are requested by the submitter. If a “gross necropsy only” is requested, then only an examination as described above will be performed with no ancillary testing. Disposal of the carcass is not included in the cost of the necropsy.
Results of the necropsy and/or ancillary testing will be reported upon completion and finalization of the case. The results for gross necropsy examinations will usually be complete within 3 business days from receipt of the cadaver and those with ancillary tests that are performed “in-house” will usually be completed in 5-10 business days. Cases that require testing performed at outside laboratories may take an additional 2-3 weeks.
