I am involved in the application of epidemiologic
principles and methods to the study of disease agents associated with
livestock and related food products. My focus is on food safety research
and animal health surveillance with a primary emphasis on beef cattle.
Much of my food safety research has been on
E. coli
O157:H7, other Shiga toxin-producing
E. coli, and
Salmonella,
but I am also involved in pre- and post-harvest food safety research on
other bacterial pathogens, antimicrobial use/resistance, and chemical
residues. My animal health surveillance work has been on the use of
clinical, diagnostic, and/or demographic data for assessing the health
status of livestock populations. We are currently focused on the
utilization of operational feedlot data for making evidence-based animal
health decisions, and believe the outcomes, including data-driven
decision support tools, will assist cattle producers in efforts to
efficiently use sparse labor resources, prudently utilize
antimicrobials, and optimize management to promote animal health and
well being. Additional research interests include the development and
application of methods for monitoring disease burden and validating
diagnostic strategies, and combining molecular and epidemiologic data
for defining the epidemiology of infectious diseases.
My primary teaching role is to further develop graduate student training
in epidemiology. In addition, I am teaching a portion of the
epidemiology courses in the professional veterinary and master of public
health programs.
