Interests and responsibilities

An assistant professor emphasizing multidisciplinary scholarship, Justin Kastner (PhD, University of Guelph, 2003; Postgraduate Diploma, University of Edinburgh, 2000; MSc, London South Bank University, 2000; BS, Kansas State University, 1998) publishes and lectures on a host of issues. These include food security and trade policy, veterinary history, the history of public health, the World Trade Organization (WTO), the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, cross-border cooperation and public-private partnerships in an era of globalization, and the history of trade disputes regarding food safety and animal disease. Blending disciplinary perspectives from international relations, history, and international political economy, Dr. Kastner works with Dr. Jason Ackleson (New Mexico State University and adjunct faculty member, DMP). Together, they direct the Frontier program for the historical studies of border security, food security, and trade policy (http://frontier.k-state.edu); since its founding, Frontier has provided an innovative research, mentoring, and skill-development environment for both undergraduate and graduate students. With Dr. Abbey Nutsch (KSU), Dr. Kastner facilitates interdisciplinary food safety and security programming and teaches the graduate course DMP 815 Multidisciplinary Thought and Presentation.  He also serves as an instructor for several online courses: DMP 816 Trade and Agricultural Health; DMP 888 Globalization, Cooperation, and the Food Trade; and DMP 680/880 Scholarship in a Busy Age (in development).
