I serve as a liaison between
Department faculty and staff and the Dean. I consult with faculty and
staff on a regular basis and represent the department in the
Administrative Council. Major administrative duties include the
following: Guidance of all professional activities of the faculty,
staff, residents and graduate students of the Department; development
and implementation of Departmental policies and procedures as required
by the College and the University; promotion and development of
independent or collaborative research, teaching and service programs;
preparation of an annual budget in consultation with Chief Financial
Officer, Business Office and faculty for the Department; fiscal
management and accountability of the Department; preparation of annual
reports summarizing all activities of the Department; conducting regular
faculty and staff meetings to facilitate faculty and staff input on
various issues, and to establish better communications at all levels;
performance evaluation of faculty and staff; recruitment of faculty,
staff and residents to the Department; preparation of documents for
tenure and/or promotion of faculty and staff; maintain Departmental
inventory of equipment and space; and providing and creating
opportunities for faculty and staff growth and development.
My primary research interests are
to study and understand the pathogenesis of important infectious
diseases of animals, and to develop strategies to protect animals from
these diseases. Identification, molecular characterization and
functional analysis of antigen/toxins of Streptococcus
suis, Mannheimia haemolytica,
and Fusobacterium necrophorum
are my primary research focuses.
I coordinate and teach a portion of the
professional Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology course to sophomore
veterinary students. This is a 4 credit hour lecture and laboratory
course. The course is designed to provide the latest information on all
facts of the microbial pathogens of animals of veterinary interest.
I supervise the diagnostic bacteriology and mycology
laboratories that provide services to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital,
college and university researchers, private practitioners, veterinary
biological industries, other colleges of veterinary medicine, and
researchers from other institutions. These laboratories also provide
valuable case material for teaching veterinary and graduate students. My
activities include consultation with clinicians, students, private
practitioners, and researchers; development of new tests; maintenance of
quality control; and interpretation of results.
