My primary research interest is exploiting the therapeutic applications of mesenchymal stem cells in cancer therapy and autoimmune diseases. My current research focus is to explore the immune properties of mesenchymal stem cells derived from umbilical cord to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in companion animals and non-human primates using rat animal model of IBD.
I collaborate with Dr. Michael Kenney in the department of Anatomy and Physiology at Kansas State University on age-dependent changes in the regulation of sympathetic nerve discharge in rat brains.I am primarily involved in developing the molecular tools to understand the cellular mechanisms in aging rat brains compared to young and middle aged groups. I also provide pathology support for other researchers on campus. Current collaborative projects include “Clinical and diagnostic assessment of Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species infections in dogs" and “Stem cell therapy for chronic arthritis in dogs”.
As a diagnostic pathologist I provide necropsy, biopsy, and consultation services for referring veterinarians and owners from the state of Kansas and numerous other locations, as well as the Kansas State University, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. I also provide pathology support to comparative medicine group which include routine gross necropsy and histopathology analysis on laboratory rodents used in research.
I assist with instruction of the fourth year veterinary students on the diagnostic medicine rotation (DMP785) which includes whole animal and gross tissue evaluation, sample collection for diagnostic testing, necropsy techniques, and analysis of findings.
