Directed service to veterinary practitioners, small
animal owners and commercial producers as a diagnostic pathologist is my major
responsibility at Kansas State University. Diagnostic service as a gross and
histopathologist is provided to clinicians serving the Veterinary Medical Teaching
Hospital and referring veterinarians from the state of Kansas and several other states.
Directed service activities are closely integrated with teaching and research activities.
Cases presented to the Diagnostic Laboratory serve as a source of teaching material for
veterinary students and pathology graduate students and residents, and are source material
for both retrospective and prospective research projects. I also supervise the
immunohistochemistry and histotechnology laboratories.
My primary teaching responsibility is as course
coordinator in charge of scheduling and organizing a teaching program for the senior
veterinary students as they rotate through the diagnostic laboratory. The program involves
instruction in necropsy techniques, interpretation of pathologic findings, collection of
specimens, and understanding the principles of available diagnostic tests.
Areas of research include canine and feline blood
groups and blood typing, iron metabolism, the acute phase response, and application of
immunohistochemical techniques for diagnostic and research problems.
