Supervisor for:
Cardiorespiratory Exercise Laboratory
Research Interests:
David Poole is recognized
internationally for his contributions to the fields of pulmonary
gas exchange and skeletal muscle structure/function
relationships. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers in
journals such as Circulation Research, Journal of Clinical
Investigation, American Journal of Physiology and the Journal of
Applied Physiology. Dr. Poole contributes invited chapters to
major textbooks and presents his work before National and
international scientific audiences on a regular basis. Since
1986, Dr. Poole has been awarded over 4 million dollars in
funding and currently is examining the relationships between
skeletal muscle structure and oxygen delivery at the
microcirculatory level. This approach is anticipated to provide
unique insights into the functional abnormalities which are
associated with major disease conditions such as emphysema,
diabetes and chronic heart failure.
Dr. Poole's laboratory is currently funded by grants from the
National Institutes of Health and encourages a vibrant
scientific atmosphere which stimulates productive interactions
among faculty and students. Foremost among his collaborators at
K-State, Dr. Poole wishes to acknowledge the significant
contributions of Dr. Thomas J. Barstow, Dr. Timothy I. Musch,
Dr. Howard H. Erickson, Dr. M. Roger Fedde, Dr. Casey A. Kindig
and Dr. Brad J. Behnke.
In collaboration with Professor Andrew M. Jones of Manchester
Metropolitan University in England, Dr. Poole has recently
published a textbook entitled: "Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Sport,
Exercise and Medicine." This book is published by Routledge,
London and New York, 2005, ISBN #-0-415-30560-8 (hardback) and
0-415-30561-6 (softback).
