Dr. Richard B. Talbot ('54, '58)

Dr. Richard B. Talbot is the professor of biomedical sciences and veterinary informatics
at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.
He earned his bachelor's and doctorate of veterinary medicine degrees from
K-State in 1954 and 1958 respectively. He did postdoctoral work for the National
Institutes of Health at Baylor University in 1959 and earned a doctor of philosophy from
Iowa State University in 1963.
Talbot has been a faculty member at Iowa State University, the
University of Georgia and Virginia Tech. He came to Virginia Tech from the University of
Georgia to help the university plan and develop a new regional college of veterinary
medicine. He served as dean of the college until 1984. From 1984 until October 1987 he
devoted full time to research and teaching.
For the next two years he was director of the Office of New Animal
Drug Evaluation at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, then returned to his teaching
and research responsibilities in November 1989. His current research interests involve
veterinary medical informatics, including management and retrieval of pharmacologic
information, veterinary medical manpower predictive models and the economic aspects of
veterinary medical delivery systems.
Talbot is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Veterinary Medical
Education, editor and secretary-treasurer of the American Veterinary Computer Society and
secretary-treasurer of the American Association of Veterinary Physiologists and
Pharmacologists. He recently was named editor of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals and
Biologicals, a standard reference work for veterinary medicine. |
