Dr. Low Receives Distinguished Alumni Award
On June 5, 1994, Dr. Donald G. Low, KSU 1947, was recognized by the KSU
Veterinary Medical Alumni Association as the 1994 Distinguished Alumni.
Dr. Low was one of the pioneers of canine urology. He was actively
involved in the training of many of the current leading veterinary
urologists. He has served as director of three university veterinary
medical hospitals, all with distinction. He is one of the founders of
American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and of the
National Academy of Practice Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Low served on the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)
Council on Education and as an AVMA Delegate. He has receive a multitude
of awards including: the Norden Distinguished Teacher Award, College of
Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota, 1968; Distinguished
Service Award, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Minnesota,
1989; Distinguished Service Award, American College of International
Medicine, 1992; Veterinarian of the Year, American Animal Hospital
Association, 1971; and the Outstanding Continuing Education, California
Academy of Veterinary Medicine, 1990. Dr. Low was President of
International Medicine Specialty, ACVIM, 1976; President of American
Association of Vet Clinicians, 1969-70; Member, Board of Regents, ACVIM,
1972-74; Board Certification, ACVIM; Memberships, California Veterinary
Medical Association; AVMA; American Animal Hospital Association. He was
Private fist-class, ASTP, Manhattan, KS, 1943-1944; Captain, Veterinary
Corp, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 1953-55.
Dr. Low is author of over 100 technical articles; co-author of the book,
Small Animal Urology , 1972; Editor, Genitourinary System Current
Therapy V and Current Therapy IV; Researcher, (NIH funding) Diseases of
Urinary System (Leptospirosis), 1953-69. He was a member of Council on
Education; AVMA Chair, 1988-89; Member, Convention Management and
Program Comm., AVMA, 1991-1997; Co-Chair, Program Commissioner, Arizona,
Nevada, California Veterinary Conference, 1990-present; Delegate, House
of Delegates, AVMA, 1970-73; Member, Fundraising Committee, United
Methodist Church, Columbia Heights, Minn., 1957-63; Treasurer, Cub
Scouts, Columbia Heights, Minn., 1958-61.
