Two Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine alumni received awards from the college. They will be presented with their award plaques and honored on June 6 at the College’s Annual June Conference and Veterinary Medical Alumni Association Bar-B-Que at Trotter Hall on campus.
William L. Mengeling, a veterinary microbiologist and virologist from Ames, Iowa, is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his outstanding achievements in the field of veterinary medicine. He is currently research leader of the Virology Swine Research Unit at the National Animal Disease Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Research Service in Ames. He is responsible for administering an annual budget of $1.9 million for his unit.
Mengeling's record of accomplishments has been called "unparalleled." He is an internationally recognized authority on several swine diseases. He developed a fluorescent antibody test for hog cholera; discovered porcine parvovirus and developed a vaccine to protect pigs against this disease; and has been a research leader on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome.
Mengeling earned a bachelor's degree in 1956, a DVM in 1960, and a Master's in Microbiology in 1966 from Iowa State University, and holds a PhD from Iowa State University. He became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in 1973.

Loyce D. Jernigan, Council Grove, is the recipient of the E. R. Frank Award for his positive and significant contribution to veterinary medicine and K-State. Jernigan received his DVM from K-State in 1945. In the mid-1960's he was a faculty member of the department of surgery and medicine (now clinical sciences), where he helped many students gain confidence in their abilities. He accomplished this, in part, by taking senior students with him on rotation to his practice in Council Grove. In this way they were provided with hands on experience in veterinary medicine.
Jernigan has been a civic leader in various activities in and around Council Grove and is a past recipient of the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association practitioner of the year award. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Kansas Board of Veterinary Examiners for many years. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association. He continues to be involved in general veterinary medicine practice in Council Grove.
