Oncology Residency

Description of Program:

The medical oncology residency at Kansas State University is a 3 year program. The goal of the program is to prepare the resident to become board certified in Oncology. To this end, the resident will also participate in weekly journal clubs for small animal internal medicine and oncology, clinician morbidity and mortality rounds, ACVIM board preparation rounds, histopathology and cytology rounds, and house officer seminars. The resident is expected to sit the ACVIM qualifying examination after the second year, and the certifying examination after the third year. At KSU the ACVIM boarded specialists include 3 Oncologists (2 of whom are active in the clinic), 5 Small Animal Internists, and 1 Cardiologist. Board certified specialists in the support services include 3 Radiologists, 3 Surgeons, 3 Anesthesiologists, 2 Ophthalmologists, 1 Dermatologist, 3 Clinical Pathologists and 5 Anatomic Pathologists.

Within the 3 years, the resident will spend100 weeks on clinical service under the direct supervision of a diplomate of ACVIM, Oncology, and 12 weeks of the third year as chief resident of the Oncology service. While on clinics, the resident, along with the senior faculty clinician, will be responsible for receiving clinic appointments, supervising veterinary students and interns in daily case management, and leading student rounds.

The remaining 44 weeks are spent in a combination of research, preparation of scientific manuscripts, rotating through other services (e.g. radiation oncology), and annual leave. The resident must complete a worthy research or clinical investigative project. The resident must submit at least 2 first author manuscripts to a refereed journal. One publication must be based upon the resident’s project; this publication is also required by the ACVIM Credentials Committee in order to sit for the certifying examination. The other publication may be a case report or another project. The resident also has the option of completing a Masters or Ph.D. degree.

A Residency Certificate will be awarded after the successful completion of the 3-year program.
