AWVF Annual Recognition Awards - Nominations Due May 1, 2009

The Association for Women Veterinarians (AWVF) is accepting nominations for its annual recognition awards: The Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year Award and the Distinguished Service Award. Award nominations are due May 1st each year.

Nomination for Outstanding Women Veterinarian of the Year (OWVY) is open to any woman graduate of an accredited veterinary school. The purpose of the OWVY award is to recognize special effort and achievement by a woman veterinarian in any area of veterinary medicine, e.g., general practice, small animal practice, large animal practice, research, laboratory animal medicine, public health, etc. Nomination for Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year should emphasize professional accomplishments.

Nomination for the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) is open to any individual (man or woman, veterinarian or non-veterinarian). The purpose of the DSA award is to recognize special effort and contributions of an individual to advance and improve the status of women in veterinary medicine. Nomination for Distinguished Service Award should emphasize contributions made to advance or improve status of women in veterinary medicine such as contributions to professional groups, state or local associations, Veterinary State Boards, publications, etc.

The Judith Spurling Blue Ribbon Award is a non-competitive citation and expression of thanks that is bestowed intermittently (not necessarily annually) to honor an AWVF member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the goals and mission of the AWVF. Nomination for the Judith Spurling Blue Ribbon Award is open to anyone who exhibits the enthusiasm and dedication personified by Dr. Judith Spurling. Dr. Spurling has been a caring, hardworking, innovative private practitioner, who for thirty-five years has taken the time to give steadfast support to women veterinarians and veterinary students. Throughout those years, AWVF was fortunate to find her ready to serve wherever needed: Secretary, Treasurer, President, leader of fact-finding projects, organizer of events and booths, generous recognizer of the accomplishments of others, and from time to time, our office manager. The AWVF takes special note of those few women who held this Association together in 1976 and rejuvenated it because, as Dr. Spurling put it, “We thought we could give advice and support to the newer members of the profession because of what we had lived through.”
