CAPNA MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
Program: Months 1-12
Overview of Program
The CAPNA Mentorship Program has been developed to assist young veterinarians with the transition to private practice veterinary medicine during their first year at a CAPNA hospital.
In an effort to take advantage of the unique design of CAPNA, and the many talented veterinarians spread across the country, the CAPNA Mentorship Program was designed to have 2 components:
• Local / On-site Mentor:  A more time-intensive, hands-on mentor adhering to a more structured program.  Designed to be a senior veterinarian present at the workplace alongside the mentee.
• Long-Distance / Offsite Mentor:  A more casual mentor, available by phone for advice / assistance without a structured curriculum.  The Long Distance mentors will be volunteers from other CAPNA hospitals, assigned by a “Long Distance Mentor Coordinator” at CAPNA from a pool of volunteers.  It is believed that this resource could provide new graduates with an opportunity to discuss situations in a confidential manner that may be uncomfortable to discuss with their local / on-site mentor
Although a hospital is more than welcome to use only one of the above mentoring services, the program has been developed with the use of BOTH local and long-distance mentorship for each mentee in mind.
