I am Leslie Turner, DVM, a resident veterinarian looking for a veterinary assistant/graduate intern to help on a large racing Quarter Horse ranch owned by Bobby D. Cox. Mr. Cox is well respected in the industry. He was 2016's leading breeder and was recently inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a beautiful 2200 acre ranch located in central Texas, about 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth. There are rolling hills and lots of grass and trees for those of you who may think only of sand and blowing tumbleweeds when you hear the word Texas. The ranch is home to 400-600 horses, depending on the time of year. We have 130 to 140 foals each spring, most of which are embryo transfer foals. The great majority of these are born January thru mid-March making it very busy early in the year. We have a night person who watches the foaling mares closely and calls when one starts to foal. Because our foaling season keeps getting compressed in an effort to have earlier foals, I would like to get someone here who can rotate with me being on call for those foalings. I like to stomach tube the newborn foals with colostrum within the first 30-60 minutes of life. I can't trust just anyone to do that, but on the other hand, I cannot be up every night and continue to function every day, 7 days a week. The foals are imprinted and halter broke within the first few days of life which makes that process easier and safer for both the foal and handler as opposed to halter breaking them as weanlings or yearlings . All foals receive preventative plasma on days 1 and 20. This would be one of your responsibilities . With this many horses, there are always some requiring treatments, wound cleaning or wraps. X-rays and surgeries are primarily done at one of the clinics in nearby Weatherford, Texas. We try to send our interns to the clinic as often as possible with the horses so they get exposure in that setting as well. A few mares here will carry their own foals, but most embryos are flushed and couriered to a farm in Oklahoma where they are transferred to recipient mares. Once those mares are heartbeat positive, they come down to this ranch and stay till their foals are weaned the following year. No stallions stand at this ranch. All semen is cooled and shipped in. Only occasionally is frozen semen utilized due to the labor intensity required. All records are kept on computer- breedings, treatments, locations, everything. We have a vaccination and worming schedule that is followed on the foals as well as the older horses. A farrier comes week ly to keep the foot care of all the horses up to date. I primarily need help from January through June. If you are interested in starting sooner or staying longer, we are flexible, particularly depending on your performance . You will probably feel like you have been thrown into the fire, but I assure you that we pretty much treat each other like family (a nice family!). You will see & learn more about mares and young foals in a short time here than you might over an extended length of time at most other places. I realize time is getting short for this posting. If you are interested, you are welcome to visit the ranch website at bobbycoxranch.com. I can be contacted at lturner@bobbycox.com. I look forward to hearing from you, Leslie Turner , DVM
