Conference Objectives
From Egg to Foal: An Equine
Reproduction Conference for Horse Breeders is designed to
provide those individuals involved with equine breeding an
opportunity to learn the procedures involved in artificial
insemination, shipment of equine semen, care of the pregnant
mare and neonate, and handling of foalings. Extensive hands-on
experience will be provided on artificial insemination
technique, semen collection, proper handling, evaluation and
proper preparation for transport, as well as on resolution of
dystocias and manipulation of the fetus during foaling. The
discussion on expectations from an artificial insemination
program and record keeping is designed to help breeders detect
and troubleshoot problems in a breeding operation. The second
day of the course will focus on equine obstetrics and
neonatology. Information will be provided to help breeders
detect and solve problems during equine pregnancy and
parturition and provide adequate immediate neonatal care to
foals. In addition, in light of the last outbreak and cases
reported of Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) in New Mexico, Utah,
Oklahoma and Kansas, a discussion on prevention and control of
EVA will be included. Supervised instruction will be provided by
veterinarians from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital,
Kansas State University, including a reproduction specialist
certified by the American College of Theriogenologists.
Conference Wet Labs
Conference participants will have the
opportunity to gain hands-on experience in each of the following
wet labs:
• Stallion handling and semen collection over a teaser mare and
over a phantom
• Semen evaluation, preparation and packaging for shipping
• Artificial insemination
• Fetal manipulation during foaling
