Conference Objectives
The objective for this conference is to provide up to date, practical
information on hot topics in food animal practice. The presenters will
focus on providing information that can be used immediately by the
practitioner.

Conference Speakers
Mike Apley, DVM, PhD
Assistant Professor, Veterinary
Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine, Iowa State University,
College of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Apley received his DVM from Kansas State University in 1987. He then
completed his PhD in 1992. He is currently an Associate Professor in the
Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine in
the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. His primary
interests include bovine medicine and pharmacology and beef production
medicine.
David Gnad, DVM,
DABVP(Food Animal)
Assistant Professor, Section Head, Agricultural Practices
Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Gnad received his DVM from Kansas State University in 1996. After
graduating, he practiced in mixed animal practices in Augusta and Hays,
Kansas. He then joined the faculty at KSU in the section of Agricultural
Practices. His primary clinical interests deal with beef cattle
production, specifically purebred and commercial cow-calf operations as
well as beef stocker operations. He provides herd health services to
beef and dairy clientele of the KSU-VMTH. Areas in beef production of
special interest are reproduction and infectious disease epidemiology.
Dan Upson, DVM, PhD
Faculty Emeritus
Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Upson received his DVM from Kansas State University in 1952. He
spent the next year working in Hutchinson, Kansas and then established
his own practice in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Returning to K-State in
1959, he joined the faculty in the Department of Physiology, completed
an MS in 1962 and a PhD in 1969. He taught veterinary students at
K-State for 35 years, retiring with Emeritus status from the College of
Veterinary Medicine in 1994. His areas of veterinary specialization
include Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology, Food Animal Pharmacology,
Bovine Pharmacology, Safety and Wholesomeness of Food of Animal Origin
and World Resources and Food for Man. Dr. Upson is active as a
consultant to the beef industry.
Paul Walz, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVIM
Assistant Professor, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery
Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Walz received his DVM in 1992 from Michigan State University. He
then completed a residency and MS in 1997 and his PhD in 2000 also at
MSU. Paul joined the faculty of Kansas State University in 2000 as an
assistant professor of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery. Paul’s
veterinary interests include medical and surgical conditions affecting
food animals, as well as infectious diseases of cattle. His research
interests focus on infectious diseases of cattle, specifically infection
of cattle with bovine viral diarrhea virus.
