Symposium Schedule

Thursday, July 31
3:30 – 6:30 pm Check-in at West Hall - Derby Dining Center
6:00 pm Welcome Reception & Registration
6:30 pm Brief Welcome & Schedule Review - Dinner
8:00 pm Free Time (K-State CVM Ambassadors and Student Scholars will be available to provide guided tours to the activities of your choice: K-State Campus, College of Veterinary Medicine, Peters Recreation Center, and the Aggieville District.)

 
 

Friday, August 1
7:30 – 8:00 am KSU Student Union - Registration for Late Arrivals
8:45 am Official Welcome: CVM Dean Ralph Richardson (8:45-8:50)
Review of Symposium Goals: Dr. Gerry Hickey (8:55-9:00)
9:00 am IceBreaker Activity
10:00 am Poster Session I: Every scholar attending the symposium will present their research efforts in poster format. Every scholar poster will be mounted in the main ballroom of the KSU Student Union on Friday morning (7:30-8:00 am) and remain available for viewing until Saturday afternoon (4:00 pm). Four one-hour sessions (Poster sessions I, II, III, IV) will be devoted formally to viewing posters; one-fourth of the scholars will be required to be present at their posters during each session. Additional time for viewing posters occurs during breakfast and lunch on Saturday; these buffet style meals take place in the K&S ballrooms adjacent to the main ballroom containing the posters.

4-5 panelists,
5-10 minute individual presentations followed by audience questions

The majority of student scholars supported by Merck-Merial engage in research at universities. The purpose of this panel is to give students insight into non-academic research environments.

A: Student Suggestions for Promoting a Scientific Research Culture within the
Veterinary Community.
B: Student Perceptions about Research Funding (challenges and opportunities)
C: Student Perceptions about the Advantages of a Research Career
D: Student Perceptions about Disadvantages of/Obstacles to a Research Career
E: Student Concerns about Work: Life Balance
F: How Can Directors Improve the Programs?
G: Pre-Veterinary Students

Hypnotist: Veterinarian and former FFA member, Dr. Al Snyder mixes hypnosis and humor to get the group working and laughing together.

Cosmic Bowling and Billiards: Who cares if you can roll a strike when there’s dance music, disco lights and bowling balls that glow in the dark?

Format: 5 panelists or teams of panelists (Where appropriate, the spouses or significant others of panelists will be invited to attend and contribute)

Veterinary student scholars are very concerned about the demands of combining a research career with a meaningful personal life. The panelists featured here vary in age and life experience, although all of the proposed participants are researchers and parents
