Guest Speaker

Lionel Dawson, BVSc, MS, DACT
Professor, Department of Veterinary Clinical Services,
Oklahoma State University

Dr. Dawson graduated from Madras Veterinary College in India in 1978. After graduating, he joined the staff at Iowa State University as a Graduate Assistant. During this time he began working on an MS degree in Theriogenology. Dr. Dawson then completed his residency in Theriogenology at the University of Missouri. In 1982, he joined the faculty at Oklahoma State University as an assistant professor in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Dawson is currently a professor of Theriogenology and Field Service and Research and Extension for Oklahoma State University and the E. (Kiki) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research at Langston University.


K-State Speakers

David Anderson, DVM, MS, DACVS
Professor and Section Head,
Agricultural Practices
Dr. Anderson received his DVM from North Carolina State University. He then completed a 1-year internship in medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia and a 3-year residency at Kansas State University. Dr. Anderson became a board certified specialist in surgery in 1995. While at Kansas State University, he earned a MS degree in Clinical Sciences. After 11 years at Ohio State University as Head of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Dr. Anderson returned to K-State in 2006 as Professor and Section Head of Agricultural Practices.


Brian Faris, PhD
Assistant Professor
Animal Science and Industry
Dr. Faris earned his Ph.D. in Animal Science (Repro) from New Mexico State University in 2004. Prior to coming to Kansas, Brian served as the Extension 4-H Youth Livestock Specialist at North Carolina State University. Dr. Faris now serves K-State as the Sheep & Meat Goat Specialist with a 70% Extension and 30% Teaching appointment. His extension duties involve conducting educational programs for purebred and commercial sheep and meat goat producers throughout Kansas and working closely with county extension agents to bring the latest research information and production practices to the counties so it may be relayed to the producers.


Meredyth Jones, DVM, MS, DACVIM
Clinical Assistant Professor
Agricultural Practices
Dr. Jones received her DVM from Oklahoma State University in 2002. She entered private practice at the Midway Veterinary Clinic in Brandenburg, Kentucky for one year. She then completed a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine-Emphasis Food Animal and received an MS degree in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at Oklahoma State University in 2006. Dr. Jones joined the K-State faculty in July of 2006.


Shelie Laflin, DVM
Assistant Professor
Agricultural Practices
Dr. Laflin graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. After graduating, she completed an internship in Food Animal Medicine at Colorado State University. Since then she has taught as a clinical instructor in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery at Kansas State University and has expanded her duties in clinical teaching as an assistant professor. Her primary interests are small ruminant production and individual medicine plus beef cattle individual and preventative medicine. She is involved with providing beef cattle carcass ultrasound services.


Matt Miesner, DVM, MS, DACVIM
Clinical Assistant Professor
Agricultural Practices
Dr. Miesner received his DVM from Washington State University in 1999. He then practiced as an associate veterinarian in general private practice in Pasco, Washington before beginning a residency in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery at Ohio State University. After his residency Dr. Miesner remained at OSU as a clinical instructor and a year later was appointed as an assistant professor and also received his MS degree. Dr. Miesner joined the K-State faculty in August of 2006.
