Conference Objectives
Conference
This conference will provide an update on the medicine, clinical and diagnostic techniques, anesthesia, and nutrition of companion birds, reptiles, and exotic companion mammals. Optional wet labs on small mammal dentistry and on the chemical restraint of zoo and wild animals, an interactive master class on the clinical pathology of small mammals, and a “behind the scenes” tour of the Sunset Zoo will be offered.
Master Class: Comparative Clinical Pathology
This interactive session will focus on the clinical pathology of exotic animals, with emphasis on rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs. Using PowerPoint, this class will address normal and abnormal clinical pathology findings, as well as discussing clinical implications and treatment options. (2.25 hrs)
Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo (detailing animal husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by zoo staff. (2.25 hrs)

Guest Speakers
Dr. Angela Lennox, Dipl. ABVP (Avian), has practiced exclusively exotic animal medicine since 1991, and is the owner of the Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic of Indianapolis. She was named the Exotic DVM of the Year in 2005. Dr. Lennox is an Adjunct Professor, Purdue University, where she teaches exotic animal medicine. She has written and lectured extensively throughout the US and internationally, and was voted Exotic Speaker of the Year at the 2007 NAVC. Dr. Lennox is Past-President of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, editor of the Handbook of Rabbit and Rodent Dentistry, and co-author of Clinical Radiology of Exotic Companion Mammals.
Dr. Terry Campbell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences, Colorado State University, and has 30 years of experience in exotic animal medicine. He is the author of Avian Hematology and Cytology as well as over 200 scientific papers and book chapters.
Dr. Micah Kohles is the Director of Technical Services, Oxbow Animal Health, and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Kohles has worked in private practice as well as with multiple zoos and has done conservation work in Africa and Mongolia.
Dr. Connie Ketz-Riley is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of the Zoo, Exotic, and Wild Animal Medicine Service at the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
KSU Faculty Speakers
Dr. James W. Carpenter, Dipl. ACZM, is the editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary (2005) and co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2004). He is a Past-President of both the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and was named Exotic DVM of the Year for 2000. Dr. Carpenter is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery and President of the American College of Zoological Medicine. He is a Professor of Zoological Medicine at Kansas State University.
Dr. Gary West, Dipl. ACZM, was the former Director of Veterinary Services for both the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio, TX, and the Oklahoma City Zoo, Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. West is the editor of Zoo Animal & Wildlife Immobilization and Anesthesia (2007). He is currently an Assistant Professor of Zoological Medicine at Kansas State University.
Dr. Kristin Phair received her DVM from Cornell University and recently completed a small animal internship at Oradell Animal Hospital, New Jersey. She is currently the Intern in the Zoological Medicine Service at Kansas State University.
Parking
Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and on the east side (off Jardine Drive) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A parking permit is not required for weekend parking. Do not park in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.
