This conference has been developed to meet the needs of the many
practitioners who regularly or occasionally treat small ruminants. The
conference guest speaker is Dr. David Pugh who is an internationally
recognized expert on sheep and goats, editor of the textbook Sheep
and Goat Medicine, and Board Certified in both the American College
of Theriogenologists and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
This conference will also feature Kansas State University faculty Drs.
Shelie Laflin, Meredyth Jones, Matt Miesner, and David Anderson.

Speaker
David Pugh , DVM, MS, DACT, DACVN
Consulting Veterinarian, Fort Dodge Animal Health
Dr. Pugh earned both DVM and MS (ruminant nutrition) degrees from the
University of Georgia. He received post DVM training at Virginia Tech (equine
nutrition) and Texas A & M University (Theriogenology). Dr. Pugh has held
faculty positions at the University of Georgia (Assistant Professor) and Auburn
University (Professor of Large Animal Medicine), and was the owner of a multiperson
large animal practice in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area for five years.
During his academic career he taught veterinary nutrition, lectured on
reproductive medicine for horses and small ruminants, and was a clinician in
Ambulatory Medicine and Theriogenology. He is the author of >600
publications, ~ 70 book chapters, a textbook, has received five university and
three national awards for teaching, and was the 2006 recipient of the AM Mills
Award for contributions to Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Pugh is a Diplomate of both
the American College of Theriogenology and the American College of
Veterinary Nutrition. He has served on various committees for the American
Association of Equine Practitioners, the American Association of Small
Ruminant Practitioners, the Society for Theriogenology, the College of
Theriogenology, and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. He has
been a Consulting Veterinarian for Fort Dodge Animal Health since 2004.
K-State Conference Speakers
David Anderson ,DVM, MS, DACVS
Professor and Section Head, Agricultural Practices
Dr. Anderson received his DVM from North Carolina State University. He then
completed a 1-year internship in medicine and surgery at the University of
Georgia and a 3-year residency at Kansas State University. Dr. Anderson
became a board certified specialist in surgery in 1995. While at Kansas State
University, he earned a MS degree in Clinical Sciences. After 11 years at Ohio
State University as Head of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Dr. Anderson
returned to K-State in 2006 as Professor and Section Head of Agricultural
Practices.
Meredyth Jones ,DVM, MS, DACVIM
Clinical Assistant Professor, Agricultural Practices
Dr. Jones received her DVM from Oklahoma State University in 2002. She
entered private practice at the Midway Veterinary Clinic in Brandenburg,
Kentucky for one year. She then completed a residency in Large Animal
Internal Medicine-Emphasis Food Animal and received an MS degree in
Veterinary Biomedical Sciences at Oklahoma State University in 2006. Dr.
Jones joined the K-State faculty in July of 2006.
Shelie Laflin , DVM
Assistant Professor, Agricultural Practices
Dr. Laflin graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary
Medicine in 2000. After graduating, she completed an internship in
Food Animal Medicine at Colorado State University. Since then she has taught
as a clinical instructor in Food Animal Medicine and Surgery at Kansas State
University and has expanded her duties in clinical teaching as an assistant
professor. Her primary interests are small ruminant production and individual
medicine plus beef cattle individual and preventative medicine. She also is
involved with providing beef cattle carcass ultrasound services.
Dan Linden , MS
Mr. Linden received his MS degree in Veterinary Science from Ohio State
University specializing in camelid nutrition and grazing management. He was
herd manager for Ohio State University Camelid Health Program. Dan is
currently pursuing a PhD in Ruminant Nutrition in the College of Agriculture at
K-State.
Matt Miesner ,DVM, MS, DACVIM
Clinical Assistant Professor, Agricultural Practices
Dr. Miesner received his DVM from Washington State University in 1999. He
then practiced as an associate veterinarian in general private practice in Pasco,
Washington before beginning a residency in Food Animal Medicine and
Surgery at Ohio State University. After his residency Dr. Miesner remained at
OSU as a clinical instructor and a year later was appointed as an assistant
professor and also received his MS degree. Dr. Miesner joined the K-State
faculty in August of 2006.
