Conference Objectives

Conference
This conference will provide an update on the medicine, diagnostic techniques, and surgical procedures used in companion birds, reptiles, rabbits, and other small exotic mammals. An optional wet lab on clinical and surgical techniques in reptiles, an interactive master class on behavior of small mammals, and a “behind the scenes” tour of the Sunset Zoo will be offered.

Wet Lab: Clinical and Surgical Techniques in Reptiles
Participants will perform selected surgical procedures including celiotomy, orchidectomy/ovariohysterectomy, liver biopsy, cystotomy, etc., in lizards. In addition, the surgical anatomy of lizards will be reviewed, and common clinical techniques will be practiced. The comparative clinical anatomy of other reptiles will also be demonstrated. (3.5 hrs)

Master Class: Normal and Abnormal Behavior of Small Mammals
This interactive session will focus on the behavior of small mammals, with emphasis on rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs. Using PowerPoint, this class will address normal and abnormal behavior and behavior modification, as well as the medical implications of abnormal behavior, pain-associated behaviors, and how captivity affects behavior. (2.5 hrs)

Sunset Zoo Tour
Behind the scenes experience at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo (detailing animal husbandry, holding, enrichment, nutrition, and education). Tour led by zoo staff. (2.25 hrs)

  • Refunds, less a $25.00 handling charge, will be made if notification is received by October 29, 2008.
  • Registration includes lectures, proceedings, and refreshment breaks.
  • Wet Lab, MasterClass, and Zoo Tour require a separate registration and have limited spaces available. Space will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Practitioners will be given priority for the Clinical and Surgical Techniques in Reptiles Wet Lab.

Guest Speakers

Dr. Doug Mader, Dipl. ABVP, is the consulting veterinarian for the Key West Aquarium, the Marathon Sea Turtle Hospital and the Monroe County (Sheriff Animal Farm) Zoo. Dr. Mader is an internationally acclaimed expert in Veterinary Medicine and travels extensively every year teaching at Veterinary Conferences, Veterinary Schools, and Specialty courses. Dr. Mader is also on the review boards of several scientific journals. He has published numerous articles in scientific and veterinary journals, national magazines, newspapers, book chapters, and is the author/editor of Reptile Medicine and Surgery, 2nd ed. (2006). Dr. Mader is a Fellow in the Royal Society of Medicine.

Dr. Teresa Bradley-Bays is a private practitioner from Belton, Missouri, who specializes in the medicine, surgery, and analgesia of exotic pets. She is a Past-President of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, the author of numerous articles on exotic animal medicine and surgery, co-editor of Exotic Pet Behavior: Birds, Reptiles, and Small Mammals (2006), and is a nationally recognized speaker.

Dr. Connie Ketz-Riley is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of the Zoo, Exotic, and Wild Animal Medicine Service at the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

 

KSU Faculty

Dr. James W. Carpenter, Dipl. ACZM, is the editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary (2005) and co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2004). He is a Past-President of both the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and was named Exotic DVM of the Year for 2000. Dr. Carpenter is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery and President of the American College of Zoological Medicine. He is a Professor of Zoological Medicine at Kansas State University.

Dr. Judilee Marrow is an Intern in the Zoological Medicine Service at Kansas State University.

Dr. Gary West, Dipl. ACZM, was the former Director of Veterinary Services for both the San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio, TX, and the Oklahoma City Zoo, Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. West is the editor of the recently published book Zoo Animal & Wildlife Immobilization and Anesthesia (2007). He is currently an Assistant Professor of Zoological Medicine at Kansas State University.

 

Parking
Parking is available on the west side (off Denison Avenue) and on the east side (off Jardine Drive) of the Veterinary Medical Complex. A parking permit is not required for weekend parking. Do not park in the client parking or reserved stalls as you may get ticketed.
